Queen Bey is not playing with y’all. Have you seen her looking fantabulous on the cover of Vogue’s March issue? Are you going to see her headline the Essence Fest as part of The Mrs. Carter Show world tour in July? And who’s watching her Oprah’s Next Chapter interview and Life is But a Dream premiere this weekend on HBO?

I’ll stop short of buying her limited edition Pepsi cans (as I’m a loyal Coke drinker), but dang. Can’t knock this chick’s hustle! If Blue Ivy needs a wise big sister I’m available to be adopted.

Ease on down the road…

I feel like I’ve posted this before, and if I have, bear with me. What with emerald being the color of the year and The Wiz turning 35, I predict a few more Oz-themed posts for the blog. The themes in The Wiz and The Wizard of Oz are special to me, because aren’t we all on some sort of wild or weird journey? Haven’t we all felt like we could use a fairy godmother or just a little bit more heart, courage or wisdom? Haven’t we all wanted a pair of super fabulous shoes to protect us and send us back to safety (or at least over the rainbow)?

I forgot that I am literally one of Dorothy’s granddaughters, and whatever I need for this journey, I already have. I needed to hear this today, and maybe you do, too:

If you’re feeling like “you can’t win, you can’t break even, or you can’t get out of the game”, just keep it pushing, darlings…and don’t let the turkeys (okay, crows) get you down. And if this isn’t a shoe that will make you strut down the yellow brick road of life, I don’t know what is. The “Diva” by Jimmy Choo is available at Nordstrom for $1495.

It’s Throwback Thursday! Remember these?

Raise your hand if you had one (or more) of these colorful plastic charm necklaces or bracelets in the ’80s.  For the life of me, I can’t remember where mine came from (probably Shoes Two, Boo’s, Holiday or Crib to College) but I loved it! Just looking at this photo makes me miss Keds, side ponies, Esprit and my Sweet Valley High board game (which is going for $165 on Amazon.com… Mom, where is mine?)!

Charm bracelets and necklaces remain a chic – and well, charming – way to show off your interests and capture significant memories or milestones, no matter how you choose to accessorize them. If you’re feeling particularly nostalgic, you can find 1980s charms and completed necklaces and bracelets on Etsy.  You might also choose an heirloom or vintage piece in gold or sterling silver (which can be very pricey!). Or you might select one from Pandora, Juicy Couture (which sells charms and starter or complete bracelets) or Tiffany (and who wouldn’t love something in a little blue box?).

Wait, what?

20130206-070252.jpgI inspire someone? Little ole me? Well, that’s Gone with the Wind Fabulous! A big thanks to Karri Bentley for presenting me with this honor. I have to say that I am really inspired by all the women I’ve become acquainted with in Birmingham who are writing their hearts out and sharing their unique journeys. I am blessed and proud to be part of such a supportive, creative community of dynamic women.

And according to Karri I am now to:

Seven Things about Me:

  1. I’m afraid of flying and am known to freak out on airplanes. Like, “I need a shot of tequila or a horse tranquilizer or maybe both before flying” afraid. Well – I’m not really afraid of flying…I’m afraid of crash landings!  And I’m good for buzzing the stewardess and asking questions about strange noises or the pilot’s credentials.
  2. I’m funny about my hair. It’s been chemical relaxer-free going on five years,  it took me a long time to grow it out and to learn how to keep it healthy AND I’m tenderheaded. So one of my biggest pet peeves is when random people try to put their hands on or in it. Yes, this happens, and it’s as creepy as walking up and rubbing a random pregnant woman’s belly. Just don’t do it!
  3. I advocate on behalf of the sexual assault survivor community and I will go to my grave fighting for survivors to have a voice and access to the resources they need. Community service and volunteerism are a crucial commitment for me, and I’m very proud to be a member of a service organization that impacts the Birmingham community in such a positive manner.
  4. I walked with a limp for close to a year, thanks to a roller skating accident when I was in middle school. Add ill-considered tinted glasses, bushy eyebrows and weird hair and the fact that my mother insisted I take PE to the mix and yeah, middle school was torture for me. And because of the afore-mentioned weird hair, I will never willingly wear bangs again. Oh – and thanks to a great chiropractor and brow waxer, I no longer have the limp or the wolf brows.
  5. I love to dance…in secret. Put on The Wobble, THIS by Maze, pre-1990s Michael Jackson, or EU (Sorry, Mom!) and I’m all over the the kitchen or living room floor. Literally, because I’m not that coordinated.
  6. I make a meeeeeeeeeean seafood gumbo. I’d tell you what’s in it, but then I’d have to kill you.
  7. I love classic films and television.  I watch marathons of The Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents every year, and I live for the Turner Classic Movies channel. (If I told you how many times I’ve seen Gone with the Wind, Imitation of Life, The Little Foxes, All About Eve, The Wiz and Giant you wouldn’t believe me.)

“The UNCF (United Negro College Fund) is the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization. UNCF provides operating funds for 38 member historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), scholarships and internships for students at about 900 institutions and faculty and administrative professional training.
