Project Runway returns tonight!

Project Runway season 12 begins on Lifetime tonight!  If you didn’t care for the team challenges last season, this season has a few different surprises, including an expanded role for Tim Gunn. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the show’s resident sage will provide insight to the judges about the design process, and will also be able to save a designer from elimination. In another twist, the judges won’t know who the designers of each piece are until after votes are tabulated.  This season will also include a designer from Alabama: Ken Laurence!

KenLaurence

A little more about Ken:  “at the age of 10, his interest in fashion design was peaked and he began sketching. By the age of 13, he enrolled himself into a home economics class, where he began to use his first sewing machine. Mastering fashion illustration and sewing basics, he began educating himself on pattern making, textiles, and the prerequisites of being a fashion designer.  From that moment forward, he adopted FASHION not only as an art form but as a lifestyle!”

I expect him to present a strong point of view just from viewing his home visit , closet tour and portfolio.  Planning to watch at 8PM? Follow me on Twitter tonight (@SameChicSouth) as I provide my usual commentary about the designs and designers.   Yes, I will watch while wearing my Raybans, a la Michael Kors.

To add even more fabulosity, Belk is serving as a retail partner during this season and will supplying the items for the famed Accessory Wall.  Belk President and Chief Merchandising Officer Kathryn Bufano notes, “As the authority on lifestyle and fashion in the South, we are looking forward to adding our perspective to the show. We enjoyed pulling together more than 200 items for Project Runway to use, and we look forward to seeing how the contestants utilize the Belk accessory wall for their runway looks.”

“We’re very pleased to have Belk as our retail partner. The way they carefully curate their collection is a perfect fit for the show not only for our designers and the models on the runway but also for our fashion conscious viewers at home,” says Project Runway Executive Producer and The Weinstein Company’s President of Television, Meryl Poster.

But wait – there’s more!

During this season of Project Runway, Belk will feature the show at belk.com/projectrunway with information about accessories seen on the show, video clips and featured products based on the winning designs. Belk will also sponsor Facebook-based sweepstakes. Entrants will be eligible to win one of the following:

  • A selection from Belk accessory wall
  • A trip to New York City to see a taping of Project Runway.

Belk’s Project Runway sweepstakes will open August 8 at facebook.com/belk. The sweepstakes ends at midnight on October 25. Stay tuned!

Sweat is just fat crying.

Yes, I’m still #shredding. I decided to make this a “60 Day Shred” and am going through Workout 2 now.  I’m down several pounds and inches and I’ve lost at least one dress size; I’ll share more definite numbers at the end of this shred cycle.

It doesn’t get any easier, but this provides plenty of motivation:

pukefaint_jillian

Which is a pretty good mantra for living, period, no?

I don’t sweat; I sparkle

Pray for me.

Pray for me.

Jillian Michaels is my new BFF. We have a love-hate relationship: she loves to torture me in the name of exercise, and I hate every minute of it…until those endorphins kick in. At the end of this “strength/cardio/ab” circuit workout, combined with sensible eating (guess who’s keeping a food journal via My Fitness Pal?) and alternating lunchtime walks and stair climbing with visits to the gym (and tracking my progress with the Nike+ Running app), I better see real results or she’s getting kicked to the curb.

I checked this DVD out from the local library (because I’ve been burned before – ahem, Abs of Steel), and It. Is. Kicking. My. Butt. Which is probably a good thing. I’m not craving Cokes (as much), and water never tasted so good.

Lessons learned thus far?
1. Make small changes to your diet and build on that, and be sure to incorporate a cheat day. As in ONE cheat day. Don’t beat yourself up when you start craving steak and cupcakes…because when you work out, you’ll definitely feel hungry!
2. Just do it. It’s not fun or cute to sweat this hard, but neither are heart disease, diabetes, or a muffin top. Lace up your sneakers and get after it.
3. The 30 Day Shred is a 20 minute workout. Who can’t find 20 minutes to devote to getting healthy? If shredding is not for you then power walk, roller skate, join a Zumba class…just do something that will make you break a sweat.
4. My upcoming class reunion was motivation enough for me, but build in rewards so that you have something to look forward to.
5. Have epsom salts on hand. You’re going to need them.

I’d post “before” pictures but the interweb really doesn’t need to see my tummy.

Cam Newton talks ‘MADE’, personal style

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

There are many ways I could lead into this, but why make you wait? SCDD already told you Cam Newton was launching a menswear line with Belk, and very recently I had a quick chat with him about the collection.

The Carolina Panthers quarterback, number one draft pick, former Auburn standout, Heisman winner, GQ cover model and philanthropist has added yet another title to his resume: fashion designer. Newton presents MADE Cam Newton to suit the modern, Southern style for which our region is known – although in his words, the man who wears MADE can be found anywhere. The line features sophisticated but affordable and versatile pieces which can be mixed, matched and easily incorporated into a one’s professional and casual wardrobe. Newton was gracious enough to take time away from his many endeavors (including his studies at Auburn University) to share his views on style and what sets his collection apart.

“I understand the customer because I am a Belk customer – I think that authenticity is going to be paramount to this collection’s success,” says Newton. Confidence and comfort are two hallmarks Newton considers when getting dressed, and those qualities carry over into the collection’s pieces. “If a person is confident there’s no telling what that person is able to do,” he notes.

How did you balance your day job and other commitments with designing MADE? Anything done right will take a person’s time. Belk’s staff did a great job taking my thoughts and vision and bringing it to life. A lot of credit goes to those guys. My job was easy.

Who is the MADE “man” and what sets your collection apart? I think the ‘MADE man’ is a man that is smart. One thing I really wanted to make an impact with was having the ability to mix and match. If you have a shirt and sportcoat you really like, you can buy MADE jeans without having to pay for something top to bottom. It gives the consumer that resource. That’s the fun thing about it.

You’re 6’5. What considerations were made for men who are tall (or who have an athletic build) during the design process? It was something that was part of the focus. I stressed the importance of making clothing a person of that stature will be comfortable wearing. In this day and time, many don’t have the money to buy expensive clothes that would be tailored. I also had in mind it being comfortable for the bigger guy. I think this brand allows those guys to have an outlet to look good as well. [MADE Big & Tall will be sold on belk.com in the near future.]

What should every well-dressed man have in his closet? Different colors. You have different seasons, you have different events; having options is what this brand is about.

How would you define your style? When the opportunity is right I look up to par. From a young age my parents stressed that the first impression is the last impression. In a post-game interview, at a dinner or corporate event I always want to look the part. Not to be the flashiest or flamboyant. I want people to be able to say ‘He looked clean or well put-together.’

How does being a high profile person affect what you wear? Or does it? Nowadays social media gives everybody a voice. That voice is going to be heard. You can be at the gas station or a lounge and a picture can be taken and no matter what you have on, first impressions are the last impression.

We know you design menswear, but what’s the most stylish thing a woman can wear? That would get my attention? I’m into shoes, and I always compliment my mom about the shoes she wears. Any outfit for a female can make one dramatic change or turn heads with her [choice of] shoes.

MADE is available now in Belk department stores and online. I did notice a lot of orange and blue tones, which I’m sure will please Auburn and Carolina fans. Prices range from $28-$65 for casual sportswear and $80-$240 for suiting separates; complete suits are $500. Be on the look-out for the development of an accessories line from the brand in the future, as well as childrenswear.

Or, in which I relax, relate and release –

For the past few weeks, I’ve had a serious case of the uglies. You know. The “I hate my hair, I hate my clothes, I hate my look”…which can easily spiral into “I hate my life” if left unchecked. A monster allergy attack left me with a red nose and watery eyes, my inability to adjust to springing forward stamped dark circles under my eyes, and I was burnt out on just about everything and everyone, including myself. Then I had the worst outbreak of acne I’ve had…well, EVER.  And I’m well past puberty. Ugh!

So.

Last week I booked a stay-cation and a first class ticket on the “Get Your Life” express.  For the first time in a long time, I did nothing but think. I didn’t blog, I didn’t plan outfits or outings, I didn’t clean house or cook or make groceries or strategize or network. I stopped obsessing over the million little things I should be doing, or could be doing (if I cloned myself ten times). I gave myself the thing that’s the most difficult for me:  a break from everything, including my to-do list and my expectations.

This week, I feel better. My skin is clearing up, a trip to Alabama Allergy and Asthma Center means I can breathe without leaving a trail of Kleenex behind me (thank you, Dr. Sikora) and I don’t look quite so red and puffy, and several days of meditation and prayer have me refocused on the things I can control (my hair, my closet) and content about the things I can’t (pretty much everything else). And most of all, I came away grateful: not everyone gets the opportunity to do what they love, and I’m wasting valuable time looking at the glass half-empty, or in squeezing in more than it’s advisable for one human to attempt without a caffeine IV or help.  Last night, I got the most refreshing beauty sleep I’ve had in six months.  I surrendered my invisible plane, indestructible bracelets and lasso of truth for one week, and I’m the better for it.  Sequin toss for Alexis!

Pressing the “pause” button to relax, relate, and release for a week, a day, or even an hour is a great way to adjust your attitude and approach….and get back in the game ready to play. Not just ready to play, ready to win – at whatever fabulous goal you have on your radar.

In the meantime, Beyonce instructed us all to do an act of worship to her and announced both her H&M Summer Collection  and EPIC trailer (sounds like she could use a break too, no?) and I found out Nordstrom Rack opens on 280 on May 16! I also found out wedge sneakers do nothing for me (but that’s a post for another day). And have you heard Angela Davis AND Esperanza Spalding are coming to Birmingham?!

I’ve missed you, darlings.

Belk announces 125th Anniversary celebration plans

20130312-100224.jpg

Did you know that Belk – your destination for “modern Southern style” – turns 125 this year (on May 29)? How fabulous is that? And the family-owned retailer is ready to celebrate in a very big way, which means great things for its customers and the community at large.

I had the privilege of attending Belk’s Media breakfast yesterday, where I was seated right next to President and COO Mr. Johnny Belk himself! Mr. Belk spoke candidly about the plans to celebrate this special anniversary by opening more flagship stores, expanding private labels like Cynthia/Cynthia Rowley and Cam Newton, and continuing their commitment to community service by giving back to the local communities through “125 Days of Service,” its $2 million dollar commitment to helping makeover schools with the Points of Light Institute.

Mr. Belk also shared with us that Belk has major plans to improve the store’s online and in-store shopping experience to meet the demands of customers who are shopping in a variety of ways.

And if you’re shopping with Belk you’re going to love the 125 exclusive products Belk will have available from designers such as Michael Kors and Jessica Simpson, as well as 125 Days of Prizes, during which time Belk will award a prize valued from $500-$6,500 every day. Customers can register on Belk’s Facebook page or on belk125prizes.com. And yes, there’s more: designers like Cynthia Rowley and the Southern Design Showcase winners (whose collections will be featured online and in stores) will make appearances at in-store events!

Stay tuned for more details regarding Belk’s 125th anniversary!

VMJ_inspirationI’m posting this photo of Vivian Malone Jones crossing the Quad at the University of Alabama as today’s throwback Thursday image. It’s the last day of Black History Month and I debated about what – if anything – I wanted to say. I think breaking down doors by just standing still and then walking through them so that others may follow is pretty inspiring. And pretty fabulous. (And if you want fashion commentary, note that her trim pencil skirt and button down are still in style today!)

Chivalry over swag: a conversation with Enitan Bereola

EBereolaThanks to Catfishing, Te’oing, thinking like a man while acting like a lady and watching the parade of  Real Housewives (or Husbands), it’s no wonder young adults today are confused: simply relating to each other and to the opposite sex often seems like a comedy of errors.  In the shuffle of tweets and retweets, reposts, hastily shared Facebook statuses, memes, instant messages and emails, manners and good, old-fashioned home training are often cast aside.  Many have forgotten how to simply be, or how to behave when they can no longer hide behind a smartphone or computer screen.

Enter Enitan O. Bereola II and his Bereolaesque movement.

In true 21st century fashion, I became acquainted with Mr. Bereola through another friend-in-the-head, Demetria Lucas  , who shared his brief wit and wisdom via retweets featuring the hashtag #Pleasantries. Most of them were common sense with a slight twist, others hilarious, but all featured pointed observations about something many neglect: manners. For example:

Plesantries3

Mr. Bereola, a FAMU alum who will appear at the University of South Alabama next Tuesday, is a noted Soul Train columnist and the author of How To Be a Gentleman – Bereolaesque: The Contemporary Gentleman & Etiquette Book For The Urban Sophisticate.  He is currently writing a sequel to his first book, entitled Gentlewoman.  His message is simple: chivalry is back. I had the pleasure of chatting with him recently.

On substance over style: “I think [I’m] traditional but unconventional. [My style is] appropriate but inappropriate: class with a bit of an edge.  I say those things because I never trusted a man who was too perfectly dressed. There’s something about a guy who puts too much emphasis on dress that seems like he’s [trying to doo too much].  I’m not perfect and I have flaws. I may wear my tie bar a little crooked.”

On his mission: “My mission is to make the world a better place one gentleman or lady at a time.  People have natural desire to Bereolaesque__ebook_copybe good, but there aren’t a lot of outlets for people to do that. [We live in a world where]  ‘good’ is corny and ‘bad’ is what’s cool. We kind of grow up with that mentality that you receive attention when you’re doing bad.  Who’s on the news? The straight-A student or the person that just robbed someone?”

Is courtship dead? “It’s on a respirator.  The things is, people are so used to social networking interfaces that they don’t have any personality in real life, [they] can’t converse in real life, they get on a date and they’re a different person. You can be who you want to be via technology; you can say what you want to say and hide behind the protection.”

His inspiration?  Basketball Wives [laughs]. No I think we all have a  purpose, we’re all born to do something.”

On his signature closing (“Pleasantries”): “It’s almost a mockery of the traditional gentleman. You’d expect him to be uptight; nobody talks like that [nowadays].  Some of the things I say may not be in line with what you may expect a gentleman to say, so you go “Wait, WHAT?” It’s showing you a gentlemen may not be who you think he is; he doesn’t always look a certain way or talk a certain way. A gentleman can be anybody. I’m playing with the audience when I use that word, and opening people’s eyes to the idea that being a gentleman is accessible to anybody.”

You’re on a book tour, you’re finishing a guide for the ladies, you have a Soul Train column and you’re in overdrive on social media. How do you find balance? “Having a good woman and having a family keeps you humble and brings you to reality. I never believe my own hype. As long as you remain human in it all – I take vacations and social media fasts so I don’t get too caught up in that world.   Keeping people close who knew you before is key. Theyll be the first to tell you if you’re smelling yourself too much or remind you of a situation back in the day; you can’t get too caught up in all of it.”

What can the audience at USA expect during your visit? “They can definitely expect to laugh, be entertained and informed.  We’re going to talk about the do’s and don’ts of dating in college, what to avoid and what killed chivalry.  I definitely expect them to enjoy themselves and open up and ask whatever questions they want to ask.”

Don’t miss Enitan Bereola II and “The Do’s and Don’ts of Dating in College” on Tuesday, January 29th at the University of South Alabama’s Mitchell Center, Room 1101, at 7 PM.
