Where do we start? The Canadian tuxedo AND bustier? That heinous fanny pack and the fact that it’s embellished with dollar signs?  Or those tragic roots? None of the above are going to “happen” this side of the Apocalypse.

Shoe Designer Sam Edelman Makes Giving Chic

I told you this was going to be good.

Sam Edelman – one half of famed design team Sam and Libby – will make a personal appearance at Belk at the Summit on Saturday, March 31 from 1-3 PM.  But not only is he going to showcase haute looks from his Spring 2012 shoe collection (which is fab all by itself), he’s also going to make a $5000 donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama.  And as if the news could possibly be any more fabulous, Belk is matching his donation.

“As a male designer in the world of women’s footwear, I come in contact everyday with women whose lives are touched by breast cancer in one way or another,” said Sam Edelman. “I’m so blessed that women love shoes. I’m so blessed to work with women every day of my life and I’m so blessed to be able to give back.”

I peeked at the Spring collection, and it holds true to what the Sam Edelman brand is known for:  fashionable and modern silhouettes at great prices.  The collection features  – of course – chic ballet flats (featuring studs, snakeprint color blocking), satin espadrilles, loafers and  strappy flat sandals in bright and neutral tones, as well as gladiator sandals, wedges, peeptoes and slingbacks.

See you there!

Get Glowing with Origins’ Modern Friction

You knew there was more to skincare than simply washing your face, right?

After cleansing, I use a great exfoliator  twice a week to gently smooth away dead skin cells and refine my skin’s surface.    What I love about Modern Friction from Origins is that is works for all skin types.  I have dry, sensitive skin and have found that this creamy product is super-gentle; it’s promoted as “Nature’s Gentle Dermabrasion.”  It doesn’t “strip” my skin and leave it feeling thirsty, and I’ve never had any redness or irritation afterward.  In fact, my skin feels silky and has a glow; after moisturizing I even find that my makeup seems to apply better.  Modern Friction is available in a 4.2 ounces($37.50) and 1.7 ounces ($18.50), and trust me, a little goes a long way.

As for the ingredients, rice starch is used to refine the complexion, lemon oil boosts luminosity, bergamot and peppermint aromas refresh the skin, and aloe is included for its soothing and moisturizing effects.   Origins promotes the use of organic ingredients and essential oils to provide “high-performance” skincare, and the company is commited to “earth-friendly”  production.  Another perk?  Origins offers amazing free samples with purchase!

We no longer have an Origins store in Birmingham (boo hoo!), but the product can be purchased online.  For more on dermabrasion, click here.  And remember, for specific skincare concerns, please consult a dermatologist!

At the Dark End of the Street: Black Women, Rape and Resistance/Danielle L. McGuire

Since it’s Women’s History Month, I thought I’d suggest a book that highlights women making history (which is pretty chic, no?).

If you think you’ve read it all about the civil rights movement or its foot soldiers, think again. Danielle McGuire’s research uncovers the unsung role of women in the movement, born of their prescient need for protest and the ownership of their own bodies in the Jim Crow South.  Her work details the abduction and rape of Abbeville, Alabama’s Recy Taylor and places the Montgomery Bus Boycott and ensuing civil rights movement in an entirely new context.  As a Publishers Weekly review notes, McGuire “foregrounds black women’s experiences [of abuse] as prime movers of the grassroots movement.” I found this book to be heart-rending and eye-opening; it’s a MUST READ for mature readers.

Mrs. Recy Taylor

Note: Mrs. Taylor received an official apology from the Abbeville mayor last March, one from Alabama lawmakers last April, and visited the White House to meet President Obama last June.

Is nothing sacred anymore? Can we not have decorum anywhere? Were we at a nightclub or observing a dignified occasion?   There are some (okay, many) places where this…um…assets-first pose is inappropriate, and the Academy Awards is one of them. (All they needed was a cheap, airbrushed backdrop and it could be someone’s Facebook profile photo.)  And can this duck-lipped pout please die? PLEASE?!

Yes, I am aware ducks have bills, but you get my point.  Sigh.

Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz back it up to the microphone during last night's awards.
