#Psalm 139:14

Love this shrunken graphic sweatshirt from *Madewell ($75)! This will be perfect with boyfriend shorts, leather bottoms and my go-to pencil skirts.  The shape keeps it from being too slouchy, and the simple phrase is oh-so-chic.  I love an item with a cheeky turn-of-phrase.

Have you checked out the new Madewell location at the Summit? They have AMAZING customer service and lovely city-chic pieces!  And they are currently offering 30% off online and in stores through December 24 (with some exclusions).

I love this piece for sartorial reasons, but also it reflects where I am right now with ALEXIS.  True beauty is about accepting your perceived flaws: your freckles, your stretch marks, your weird eyebrows, your jiggly thighs – whatever – and OWNING them.

*Bien fait means “Made well” in French.

Who says you can’t wear white after Labor Day?

Let every other girl wear what’s expected; we’ll take sleek, chic winter white any day! This vintage, avant garde cocktail dress is simply perfect for making an entrance and turning heads during Birmingham’s social season.

Alas, darlings – this one is sold. *Wink*

I love it when an outfit comes together! I decided to shop my closet for this year’s Magic City Classic festivities, and the Soiree presented the perfect opportunity to build a look around my vintage sequined pants, found at Etsy. Harem pants are having a moment this year, and when kept unfussy, are pretty fab! I paired mine with a simple cream peplum top from Forever 21, a gold snakeskin clutch from Target, rhinestone hoops from Private Gallery, bracelets from J. Crew and my favorite lucite and gold Manolo Blahniks.

Sleek, chic – and best of all – my legs stayed warm!

Magic City Classic do’s (and please don’ts)

Be sure to check out SCDD’s own Alexis Barton on AL.com talking (and modeling) fashion graciously provided by Belk for this weekend’s Magic City Classic face-off between Alabama A&M and Alabama State Universities! Click HERE to read the article! Alexis’ hair was styled by Kiera Grey-Nelson and James A. Adams at Renovare Salon in Vestavia Hills. And that awesome vampy lippie you see is the Guerlain goody I mentioned in THIS post.

Friday fab: 5 things to try at Saks Fifth Avenue

20131018-140158.jpg

Holly Golightly may have had breakfast at Tiffany’s, but I recently enjoyed a much more delightful breakfast at our local Saks! Darlings, while you are out using your Shop Save & Share card , consider using it to scoop one (or all!) of these fab items:

1. Kiehl’s Rosa Arctica Youth Renegerating Cream – My skin breathes a sigh of relief every time I dab a little of this moisturizer on under my makeup. It has a refreshing scent, a lush texture and includes a “Resurrection Flower” that makes my skin feel plumper and smoother with each use. I can particularly see a difference across my forehead (which I frequently “scrunch”). TRY IT. ($60)

2. Jo Malone London fragrances “Wild Bluebell” and “English Pear & Freesia” – I’ve talked about the personal nature of fragrance before, and RARELY do I share what I’m wearing. But what I absolutely love about Jo Malone’s line is that these are made to be worn separately, but can (and should!) also be layered together, which creates a totally new, totally delicious scent. ($60 for 1 ounce of each)

3. Laura Mercier Fresh Fig Creme Body Wash – If you enjoy a luxe bubble bath or shower, this body wash is for you. It cleanses the skin without drying it out and has a subtle yet pleasing fragrance that won’t irritate sensitive skin. ($36)

4. Guerlain Rouge G L’Extrait Lip Color in “M69/Orgueil” – When cosmetics consultant Kimberly Crawford handpicked this shade for me, I was a little…scared. I haven’t worn dark lipcolor since high school, and usually stick to a nude lip (or MAC’s Ruby Woo when I’m feeling a bit daring). But this fall, beauty is all about a bold, vampy lip and I am in LOVE with this shade. The product feels like silk when applied, dries to a matte velvet finish without that horribly dry feeling matte lip color sometimes has, and the color is amazing. ($49.50)

5. Last but not least, relax and shop in total ease by making an appointment at Saks’ recently re-launched Fifth Avenue Club, which offers a very special shopping experience for customers. Shopping is neither a chore nor a bore when you have knowledgeable, approachable style ambassadors at hand who understand your budget and aesthetic and can provide personalized attention and trustworthy advice. This is an elevated level of service – where you can preview sleected looks in a swanky private suite – which makes shopping a pleasure. I I encourage you to schedule a visit, whether you’re looking for items you can mix and match for daytime wear or shopping for a special event.

Ready to shop? A Friends and Family promotion is happening now through October 20, online and in stores (with some exclusions). Saks is located at 129 Summit Boulevard.

Fall fashion at Belk is ‘seriously chic’

Even if we haven’t quite reached fall on the calendar, the crisp temps and arrival of pre-season football are putting many of us in the mood ahead of time. As you search for the perfect items to accomodate the cooler weather, Belk is ready with the top trends you need in your wardrobe this fall.

At Belk’s recent fall fashion preview, Arlene Goldstein (Vice President of Trend Marketing and Fashion Direction) suggested that shoppers embrace texture, pattern and the clever use of color in “entertaining pieces that will blend well in your wardrobe.” Before you grab something off the rack, consider whether it will add value to what you already own. “Fashion should liberate us, not fence us in,” according to Goldstein. “You can wake up every morning and be whoever you like.” (For more with Ms. Goldstein, click HERE.)

With that in mind, here are four key statements you may make this fall.

MODERN MINDSET: This is a sleek, architectural look with boxy shapes, juxtaposing the large against the small, and featuring “punk” influences like zippers and studs and dramatic optical or graphic patterns.

PAST PERFECT: Vintage, textile-driven pieces with more subtle effects. Neutral palettes, lace detailing, and embellishments are hallmarks of this look. And if you’ve grown bored with the platform soles we’ve seen for several seasons, single-sole pumps are back.

GLAM GLOBETROTTER: Pattern-mixing is key to this look, which includeds one of my favorites: animal print! Goldstein also notes, “Don’t limit shiny things to evening! Wear your glitz before six!” Tiptoe into this trend by trying a beaded or sequined top worn under a jacket; don’t wear a cocktail dress to work, darlings.

JUST DANDY: This “town and country” look features contemporary classics with a bit of a twist. Think plaid and houndstooth and military touches like brass buttons and epaulets. Flat boots and smoking slippers are part of this look.

One of the most exciting collaborations at Belk this fall is the new CYNTHIA Cynthia Rowley footwear line. The shoes feature details such as studs and ankle straps, which are on-trend for fall. Four different options are available online now, and each is a totally wearable, high-quality addition to your fall wardrobe. I tried to pick a favorite (I’m leaning toward the “City” pump), but honestly, they are all amazing and affordable (in the $90-110 price range). Check out the “Halo” pump, “River” flat, “Chelsea” bootie and “City” pump! Can’t decide between the various heel heights? Buy them all.

Summer essential: Sam Edelman ‘Gigi’

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I know I’m supposed to be transitioning to fall footwear, but can we talk about the chic simplicity of a Sam Edelman sandal? Sigh.

I’m just purchased my third pair, the ‘Gigi’ in new nude leopard, and I have a feeling I probably should have bought two because these will probably get worn out. They have a comfortable padded footbed, come in a variety of neutral colors and fun patterns, and can be worn with dresses and denim. Coincidentally, Gigis have also been spotted on the Kardsashian sisters. They’re just a well-made, fashionable, reasonably-priced sandal ($65, unless you catch a sale). I bought mine at Zappos.cm, but the Sam Edelman line is also sold locally at Belk.

(And yes, my love for certain animal prints is almost as fierce as my love of bedazzling. This shoe is a perfect “baby step” toward incorporating it into your look without your ensemble screaming “Fierce Kitty” to onlookers.)

In other news, J. Crew Factory is open at The Shops of Grand River! They’re offering 20% off on purchases of $125 or more, and you can register to win a $200 gift card.

Happy Shopping!

C is for Chic

Feeling a little nostalgic today as the kids head back to school?  I don’t have children, but I certainly miss “back to school” shopping each summer!  And there’s no reason why we can’t update our own wardrobes with items sure to make the grade.  My shopping list always included items to mix and match: new kicks (sneakers for gym class and a pair for “fun”), a few pairs of slacks and denim, at least one cozy sweater and a snazzy bookbag; below you’ll find looks for the diva who’s still schoolin’ life.

Clockwise from top left:  Forever 21 “Tres Chic” sweater, $22.80; Forever 21 Leopard-print harem pants, $19.80; Steve Madden Realove, $79.99 at Zappos.com; Louis Vuitton Neverfull GM, $980, also available at Saks Fifth Avenue; Nike Air Pegasus 83, available at Zappos.com
