‘Advanced Style’ subjects grace Lanvin’s Fall 2012 campaign

Who says beauty has an age limit?  The glamorous, effortlessly chic grande dames featured in Ari Seth Cohen’s Advanced Style blog prove beauty knows no decade.   Two of Cohen’s jazzy subjects, Tziporah Salamon (age 62) and Jacquie Tajah Murdock (age 82), are featured in Lanvin’s Fall 2012 fashion spread.

Here’s what the ladies had to say about posing:

“This campaign is a dream come true. I grew up in Harlem always wanting to be a model, but in my day there were very little opportunities for women of color to work in fashion. At 18 I went from agent to agent looking for jobs, even as a hand model. I have finally made it and I will never give up. Hopefully some day I will get to Paris!” – Ms. Murdock

“I am totally honored, jazzed, and thrilled. I am so grateful for this opportunity. In my early 20s I would have never realized that I could do something like this. It wasn’t until I was in my 40s that I began to see my beauty. By then I felt that there weren’t many opportunities for older models.  How ironic is it that i am having my big break as a model in my 60s? This is a great day!” – Ms. Salamon

Be sure to check out Cohen’s blog and his book, Advanced Style.  The photos are arresting and devastatingly CHIC.  As for me, I’m running out to get some sunscreen and eye cream; I want to age as fabulously as these women have!  I think this book adds to changing the idea that beauty and glamour are the domain of the young, and that we all need to hold on to our youth.  These women show that we don’t have to lose our vibrancy, attractiveness or relevance as we get older; in fact, we get better.  I just want to know how my grandmothers missed this casting call!

Don’t miss the upcoming Advanced Style documentary, or this  trailer with commentary from some of the jazzy models:

Kate Spade’s lipstick pink, patent leather and felt polka dot pumps are like candy for the feet, no?  Light, sweet and so fun! LOVE the pointy toe, the ladylike bow and the single sole (refreshing after seasons of seeing of the platform on everyone and their mother). Even better, these are constructed out of mesh, which means they are breathable!

The “Lisa” pump is available at Zappo’s Couture for $328 (plus free shipping!).  I also spotted them at Belk at the Summit.  If the pink to is too “Barbie-ish” for you, these lovelies also come in a neutral black or ink blue.

Haute or Not: DIY Louboutins

These crystal-studded ‘Daffodile’ platforms by Christian Louboutin are $6395.

Want the look of Louboutins but can’t afford the steep pricetag?  The Telegraph UK reports that across the pond, lovers of the red sole are buying look alikes and (gasp!) painting the soles scarlet.  From the piece:

Peter Rooney, manager at the Homebase store in Acton, London, said sales of the paint have “rocketed.”

He said: “Many people tend to look at magazines to get the right paint colour for walls and furniture, but we’ve noticed significant numbers of girls colour-matching tester pots to pictures of designer shoes in fashion magazines.

“They have also asked staff for tips on how to paint on leather or rubber.”

Homebase senior paint buyer Richard Johnson, said: “Clearly paint is meant for decorating walls rather than shoes, so we are amazed at this new trend that has hit our stores.”

Irene Rubaum-Keller, a blogger for TheBlush.com, owns genuine Louboutins and considers them worth the splurge (or worth theThe shoes have a 6 1/2 inch heel and a 2 1/2 inch platform. time spent searching on eBay),  but admits to doing the same using red nail polish.  As she notes (and as I have always thought interesting), unless the wearer has red rubber soles placed on the shoes, the color is going to wear off fairly soon.  In the end, your faux designer footwear may fool onlookers but you won’t fool yourself.  I say save your money and splurge on the real thing.

What do you think, readers?  Is stopping in Home Depot or Lowe’s for red paint and touching up a pair of non-Louboutins something you’d do in the name of fashion?

Gotta Have It: Clinique Moisturizer

As hot and dry as this weather has been, our skin needs all the TLC it can get.  Of course, you should be drinking plenty of water and using sunscreen as part of your skincare routine, but as I swiped the last of my moisturizer this morning I wanted to share just how awesome it is.  I’ve been using Clinique’s Moisture Surge Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator ($37 plus tax at Belk) for about six months.

Quite simply, this stuff is heaven in a jar.  The oil free cream-gel makes my dry skin feel velvety-soft all day long.  If you’re balking at the price, just know that a little dab goes a long way, and consider it an investment in your complexion.  It wears well under sunscreen and makeup and does not irritate sensitive skin.

I Love My: Nude Pumps

‘Parade’ pump by BCBGeneration, $89.99

Ladies, there’s nothing like a buff or beige pump to lengthen the leg. What I also love about a nude pump is that as a neutral accessory, it’s very versatile.  So whether you’re wearing neon, pastel, a primary color or basic black, this shoe will complement your ensemble.  My best practice is to keep a couple of pairs: a strappy sandal to wear with sundresses, jumpsuits and shorts and my current love: a closed-toe platform in a cashew-colored snakeskin.  The animal print gives it visual interest, and the covered platform and stiletto heel will give your legs a wow factor!

Of course, skintones vary and thankfully so do the options.  It’s very easy nowadays to find a shoe that will flatter your complexion in a toasted almond, beige, tan and so forth.  Make it a must-have for your collection.

P.S. if you find your pair is a little too tight, be sure to stretch it so that you don’t injure your feet.  Your local shoe repair can do this, or you can try what I did: a shoe stretcher!  It’s a wooden insert with a screw you turn to widen it.  Mine (okay, the one I borrowed from my mother) is cedar and can be slipped into either the right or the left shoe.  The stretcher is strategically perforated; it has a plastic nodule (or “ortho plug”) you can remove and place in key spots where your tootsies need the most relief. It works like a charm!

Recommended Reading: Women from the Ankle Down

From Ferragamo’s humble beginnings to Dorothy’s ruby slippers, from Wonder Woman’s boots to the shoe envy created by the latest Louboutin creation (with a good measure of Carrie Bradshaw’s Manolo habit mixed in), Rachelle Bergstein illuminates the social history of shoes in Women from the Ankle Down: the Story of Shoes and How They Define Us. Witty and captivating, she shares how design innovations and trends have coincided with social change.  More than a mere fashion choice, shoes have come to signify personal empowerment and economic freedom.  Jane Fonda helped lead a fitness craze with a pair of Reebok Freestyles (which, by the way, are back in style); Gwen Stefani and Courtney Love helped change the perception of women in music in wearing pairs of Mary Janes.  Men aren’t left out; Bergstein also looks at how Vans, Chuck Taylors Doc Martens transformed the scene, and she even devotes a chapter to Tony Manero’s towering platforms in Saturday Night Fever.

My “shoe confession”?  As I sit writing this in my red Italian suede flats from J.Crew, I still believe one shoe can change your life. Hey, it worked for Cinderella!
