Spring Forward with C.Wonder

March came in like a lion with its rainy weather, but the lovely spring days we’re experiencing this week are making me long for something other than filmy sundresses and cute sandals.  While some of you enjoy Spring Break, others are toiling away on their keyboards (ahem!).  Since I’m not scooting around on a Vespa for a Roman holiday (sigh!), I came up with a chic alternative. I saw this bike on CWonder.com and suddenly imagined myself gliding down the  sidewalk on Second Avenue North to run into Charm or in downtown Homewood to pop into Molly Green, all while lowering my carbon footprint.  Although I haven’t actually been on a bike since I was 12 and my allergies usually have me hotfooting it indoors, this fuchsia beauty (a unisex model which also comes in navy and orange) is enough to make me break out the Keds and hit the pavement.  Even better, the online emporium also offers a chic matching helmet, wicker basket,  bell, and bike lock!

C. Wonder, which was founded by Tory Burch’s former husband Christopher Burch, is built on the premise that every woman deserves a dose of “wonder.”  Its flagship store opened in New York this past October  (offering shoppers onsite monogramming and dressing rooms in which the music and lighting can be adjusted), and I  am loving everything it offers: clothing, shoes, jewelry and home decor.

Happy Spring!

Shoe Designer Sam Edelman Makes Giving Chic

I told you this was going to be good.

Sam Edelman – one half of famed design team Sam and Libby – will make a personal appearance at Belk at the Summit on Saturday, March 31 from 1-3 PM.  But not only is he going to showcase haute looks from his Spring 2012 shoe collection (which is fab all by itself), he’s also going to make a $5000 donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama.  And as if the news could possibly be any more fabulous, Belk is matching his donation.

“As a male designer in the world of women’s footwear, I come in contact everyday with women whose lives are touched by breast cancer in one way or another,” said Sam Edelman. “I’m so blessed that women love shoes. I’m so blessed to work with women every day of my life and I’m so blessed to be able to give back.”

I peeked at the Spring collection, and it holds true to what the Sam Edelman brand is known for:  fashionable and modern silhouettes at great prices.  The collection features  – of course – chic ballet flats (featuring studs, snakeprint color blocking), satin espadrilles, loafers and  strappy flat sandals in bright and neutral tones, as well as gladiator sandals, wedges, peeptoes and slingbacks.

See you there!

Mother and Daughters Make Design a Family Affair

Sisters Lindsay Oakley and Lauren Carpenter have launched Lila & G, a customizable children’s clothing line celebrating the handmade craftmanship their mother Karen Eubank used in creating their own clothes as little girls.  Drawing inspiration today from their lives as mothers to two little girls of their own (Lila Kate and Gwyneth Anne),  Lila &G makes the process personal: mommies and daughters design the outfit;  Mrs. Eubank constructs the final product.

What inspires your designs?   I remember us drawing out our Easter dresses and my mom would mix and match patterns or draft her own and make them.  She did that for our prom dresses too.  So really that’s been a part of our lives for a long time, since we were kids.  [Lindsay and I] noticed that there was a market for young-looking, sweet clothes made the way [our mother] dressed us.

How did you make the leap from stay-at-home mom to entrepreneur?  I was a teacher for three years; I taught music [prior to Gwyneth’s birth].  When we’re out in public Gwyneth wears clothes that I designed and my mom made, and people asked where they could buy what she was wearing.   And the same thing happened to [my sister and me]when we were growing up.  Since we’re home now, [our starting the business] just made sense.  It really just seemed like a natural thing to do.

Explain the Lila & G concept.   We looked for things you can’t find in stores and we looked for things you can mix and match.  The idea is that the mom and daughter get to design the outfit together and we get to make it.  They start with our template, and they pick the fabric and trim.  [At our design parties] we bring samples in every size, fabric, and option we  offer.  It gives the client the chance to look at everything,  to try it on their daughter, and decide how [they want to customize their outfit] based on one of the top and bottom options.  Every outfit will turn out different because there are so many options.  (Pieces run between $30-$70 for the Spring line.)

You currently only have pieces for girls.  Any plans to expand for boys? [Laughs] Currently I’m pregnant with a boy, so yes, we’ve already talked about adding a boys line to Lila & G in the future.  Now that we have a boy in the family that’s probably coming soon.  [In terms of expanding the line] we’re also going to have an heirloom line with silk fabrics, satin ribbon and French lace;  it’ll be for special occasions: flower girl dresses, christening gowns, Easter dresses, etcetera.

One last question: what’s it like working with your mother and sister?  It’s good;  it’s been really fun.  We all have similar ideas of how we think little girls should dress or would want to dress.   And it’s given us a new way to connect with each other and spend time with each other.

SCDD has Spring Fever

While many flocked to Highway 280 to the Birmingham Fashion Week kick-off party at Gus Mayer yesterday evening, chic Homewood boutique DOREE hosted an intimate sneak peek at its Spring 2012 offerings.  It was hard to focus on fashion when cheese straws and petit fours beckoned! But on to the task!

Longer days and uncommonly warm temperatures lead me to believe spring is in the air, no matter what Punxsutawney Phil observed last week.  Standout items by Seduce Clothing feature airy fabrics and organic embellishments of metal or rope and are a welcome relief from winter hats, coats and mittens.   There is a white chiffon maxi dress that has my name all over it!

What will we see this spring?  “A lot of bright colors,” says manager Meredith Carter.  “Pinks, oranges and reds worn together are definitely worth a try.”  The one shoulder fuchsia overlay blouse with bright orange lining and long fluttery sleeve byAnalili ($160) would be perfect with dark denim and a killer pair of stilettoes.

Spring fashion will also blow a kiss to the 1970s, and the rose gold blouson sequined Laundry by Shelli Segal cocktail dress ($265) is a definite Studio 54-style showstopper.  Its mini length and split back are not for the faint of heart.

Don’t forget your accessories!  Meredith recommends you purchase a large, beaded necklace as a transitional piece, and we also spotted several Bakelite-style bracelets in black, the very “now” coral and turquoise with gold and stone overlay detailing for $25.  And there is a ivory mesh envelope clutch by Urban Expressions that I also intend to add to my collection (it also comes in pink and lavender).

Doree is located at 2814 18th Street South in Homewood.

Jason Wu for Target Launches this Sunday!

This is not a drill.  As previously reported, Jason Wu’s capsule collection for Tarjhay drops this Sunday in stores and online (and will be available through March 6).  The ladylike line was inspired by Wu’s vision of an American girl in Paris and features airy prints, pleating, colorblocking and feminine touches of lace and bow detailing.  Pieces range from $19.99-$59.99 for clothing and $19.99-$49.99 for accessories.  If the haute mess that was the Missoni for Target release is still fresh in your mind and you are dead set on owning a piece without spending your 401K with Ebay carpetbaggers (I rebuke you, hot pink Versace for H&M dress!), be ready to rumble!

Game. On.

The Look for Less: Kate Spade Bow Bracelet

I love the thought of wearing a bow and packaging myself as a gift, but with this Kate Spade two-tone bracelet’s $128 pricetag (now $79.99 via 6pm.com) I had a feeling I’d have to admire this one from afar! I found the perfect compromise with Forever 21’s glossy black bow cuff (and it was easy on my pocketbook at under $5!).  It’s so easy to find current trends at “fast fashion” stores like Forever 21, H&M, Wet Seal, or Charlotte Russe that mimic more expensive pieces.  While my bracelet is no longer available online (that’s the downside; you have to be quick about buying because these stores sell out), this one is quite similar.

SHOPportunity!

Calling all area shoppers!  If you missed the news that Atlanta’s Bloomingdales (Perimeter Mall location) is closing, now’s the time to drive over (or catch the Mega Bus!) and find some deals.  The store is in the midst of a massive clearance sale which started earlier last month and will last 10 weeks.   It’s being replaced with by Von Maur, the same store reported to be headed to the Riverchase Galleria.

And don’t worry: the Bloomingdales at Lenox Mall will remain in operation.

Thanks to chic reader T. Holloway for the tip!

The Look: Skirting the Issue

Hemlines that fall gracefully below the knee to mid-calf  or maxi length are one of this season’s biggest trends that will carry over into spring.   Expect to see some high-low versions as well.  It’s a welcome departure from the much shorter hemlines that have dominated the runways for seasons.  If you dare to wear it, go for ladylike chic or edgy coolness, but remember: the “frumpy librarian” look is definitely not in season.  Keep it neutral or try an unexpected color combination.  I am loooving the crispness pleated skirts add to separates for the office, especially when paired with a silk blouse and cardigan or even a button down.  Footwear should be kept sleek: a pump,  bootie, ballet flat or smoking slipper are super cute options.  Stay away from anything clunky!  Whether you choose a knife pleat (a narrow pleat turned in one direction), a sunburst pleat (similar to a knife pleat except it has more of a flare) or a box pleat (a wider pleat; similar to old-school cheerleader skirts), this is a classic piece that should have a permanent place in your closet.

Here’s the look as seen on People Style Watch, in shorter versions:
