Ask Alexis: Help me get gameday glam!

Q: What shoes would you recommend I wear to my alma mater’s upcoming college homecoming? -A TSU Tigerbelle

A: Go Big Blue! Without knowing the exact details of your ensemble (but I assume some blue and white are involved), I’d say you have plenty of chic options.  If you’re going to be strolling the campus, observing a parade, stomping your feet at a pep rally or bonfire, or traipsing through multiple tailgates, now is not the time to break out the 4 inch stilettos.  The damage to your toes is not worth it, nor is hobbling attractive.  Save the high heels for the alumni reception or banquet (or the after party circuit!).

Instead, you could try a neutral wedge bootie, a cap-toe ballet flat, or even a tuxedo flat.  Since your mascot is pretty fierce, why not carry over the theme to your shoes, such as with Dolce Vita’s ‘Lissa’ flat ($79 at Belk)?  I’m also loving Dolce Vita’s ‘Pilar’ wedge lace-up bootie (in 3 different neutrals, $99 at Belk), and Bandolino’s ‘Abundant’ bootie (also at Belk).  The wedge will give you the lift without the pain of a stiletto heel (which can be gruesome on pavement/stadium cement). A word of caution: make sure the hem of your denim is long enough to keep the top edge of the bootie covered when you’re seated.  Other flat but fabulous options: ‘Slipified’ by Kenneth Cole, ‘Favoryte’ by Steve Madden, ‘Eavan’ by Steve Madden, ‘London’ by Coach and ‘Lunna’ by Dolce Vita (all at Belk!).

School your former classmates on style by opting for a bold shoe, or even by pairing a rich cobalt blue and black together in your ensemble (super “in” for this fall).  Leave your shoulder bag at home; opt for a sleek crossbody bag to carry your essentials. Accessorize with a bright pashmina as the temps fall, but leave the tiger ears and tail at home. Above all, be comfortable: spend a day or two breaking in your shoes, and add inserts for extra cushion.

And don’t forget your pompoms!

I bought leather leggings this week. Don’t judge me.

As seen in InStyle, Sept. 2011

Okay, darlings, I have been known to take a calculated risk or two (ahem, sequined pants) but the mother of all fashion challenges presented itself this week when I was browsing eBay (dashing all thoughts of that no-buy month): one of my fashion “unicorns” appeared during a random search. And like the mythical creature who inspired Lisa Frank folders back in the day, these GAP faux leather leggings have been on my “take no prisoners; buy at any cost” list since they appeared last year.  So when I saw them – new, unworn, and advertised for under $20 (they originally retailed at $80) – I began feverishly stalking the eBay listing.

Why didn’t I purchase the leggings at full price last year? Because they sold out. Fast. I couldn’t find them anywhere, despite my stealthy shopping tactics.  And they reappeared on the racks at other retailers this season, but somehow I couldn’t find the nerve (or the spare kidney) to purchase Zara’s $399 version

Why would I buy these? Well, why not? There’s something so fierce about leather clothing.  And the goal is to push the envelope a little bit, instead of reaching for my trusty dark denim.   Where and when will I wear them? I have no immediate idea. But Kim K. styled a pair of leather leggings pretty convincingly recently, and I’m sure I’ll wait until the weather cools to break them out, so that I don’t end up on my own epic fall fashion fail list.  I imagine my black bouclé jacket, this appliqué tee shirt, pumps and an envelope clutch will be in order on my end (okay, once this one  that has now taken up residence on the “I’m stalking you” list is found).

Kim Kardashian’s version. Chic, no?

So what are the keys to succesful eBay shopping? Patience, and the willingness to perform random searches using specific terms (which means you might keep a file or a note with the retailer, specific style name and color). Set search criteria such that eBay notifies you when what you’re looking for pops up for sale.  If you’re really determined, download the app so you can shop from the privacy of your iPhone.   Be sure to ask the seller any questions you have about the item that are not covered in the description, so that there are no unpleasant surprises (like broken zippers, or rips) when your “unicorn” arrives!

Happy shopping!

LOFT grand opening party highlights gameday chic

LOFT’s new concept store celebrated its grand opening in Alabama last Thursday, with a fashion party at the Summit location.  Spacious and plush, with bright and attractive displays and plenty of feminine appeal, the store feels more like you’ve stepped into a luxurious and welcoming walk-in closet rather than a store.  Focusing on fashion that would be appropriate for a gameday excursion, the pieces offer a bright color palette, pleasing patterns and prints, and even options for the petite or tall physique and expectant moms.  Touches of lace, and hades of raspberry, acid green and the ever-popular leopard print will be big this fall, and whether you’re shopping for the season’s must-have cropped pant, slim-fit denim, a bright belt, a snazzy scarf, the perfect necklace or a killer pair of sunnies, you can find it at LOFT.

Guests enjoyed catering by Jann Robinson of jann rob!nson Culinary Living, and as they shopped and could view gameday faves worn by local hosts Amy Bailey, Holley Grainger, Holly Lollar, Alesha Oni, Amanda Saint and Betsy Wall.  Ms. Oni, who is an Auburn University alum, modeled the Marisa Ankle Pants in fire glow orange and the Lurex Striped Scarf in winter coral with a cobalt blue shell.  When asked if the ensemble was something she’d wear to Jordan-Hare she noted “It is.  I thought about what I would wear to a game, but also on Fridays [to work] for Spirit Day.  [This is] something I could mix and match.”  I agree; the pieces are well-constructed and super cute. LOFT doesn’t skimp on details; you’ll find pieces featuring pleating, ruching, ruffles, sequins and even peplum accents.  My personal fave?  The Corded Dobby Striped Trench ($148).

Ten percent of total sales from the Grand Opening event benefited the Junior League of Birmingham’s Shop Save & Share initiative.  LOFT is located at the Summit, next to Rosenberger’s Trunk.  Shop online now; all full-price pants and denim are $20 off, all sale items are an extra 50% off, and you can get a $25 savings card for every $50 you spend on full-price items now through September 8.

To Have and To BHLDN

You didn’t think we’d let June slip by without an ode to the most popular wedding month of all, did you? Pish posh! And because we don’t like anything boring and ordinary, we dreamed up a wedding wardrobe worthy of only the most daring, most imaginative bride, using the lovely pieces at BHLDN.com, a division of Anthropologie.  The clothing, footwear, and accessories featured on the website invite brides (and those who hope to be, one day) to dream away.

Our vision is inspired by brides who throw caution to the wind and let their personality shine through.  This fantasy bride skips a ball gown or body-conscious fit and flare for her big day, choosing something short and chic instead.  Yoana Baraschi’s Arabesque embroidered silk organza sheath ($300) or Tracy Reese’s bell-sleeved ‘Persephone’ shift  ($400)let her show off her buff-colored Beverly Feldman ‘Côte de Blancs’ peep toes ($220).   She carries the Bountiful Bliss clutch by St. Erasmus ($425) in one hand and Jihan Zencirli’s Geronimo! Balloons in the other ($180 for 2).

And after the festivities are over? No run-of-the-mill, farewell suit for our bride.  She’s headed to a farflung location for her honeymoon, perhaps to the French Riviera.  This navy and white knit macrame Leeward jacket and short suit by Orla Kiely ($425 for the jacket; $315 for the shorts) is perfect.  Bon voyage!

P.S. This savvy bride doesn’t come home facing a mountain of thank-you notes to be written.  She consults Something New: The Bride’s Complete Guide to Writing Thank You Notes by chic sisters Emily Wood Smith and Rachel Wood Daniels!

MORE H&M Launch Photos

I Heart H&M

Fab ones, it doesn’t get much “hauter” than H&M’s grand opening yesterday at Huntsville’s Bridge Street Town Centre.  When I arrived at the store at 10:15 AM – nestled between Pinz Eat/Drink/Bowl and Chico’s – a line of patient shoppers trailed outside the store’s glass doors.  First in line were Devin Luckie, of Madison (a rising senior at Sparkman High School), Katie Azzam and Chandler Waite, on summer break from school in Auburn and Vienna, Austria respectively.  Having come Wednesday at 11 PM only to be turned away by security, they returned at 7 AM Thursday and met with success.  Their plan of attack once the doors opened? To purchase an accessory to reveal their free gift, then to shop normally. The lucky trio lounged on lawn chairs while a nearby dj pumped hits into the open courtyard to help keep the crowd amped.

Dawn Abotsi, an H&M spokesperson, gave me a personal tour of the brand new digs as she explained H&M’s philosophy and plans for the area.  So why doesn’t Birmingham have an H&M yet?

“We feel the South is an important market, and it comes down to finding the right location.  We don’t have any plans we can announce, but this location is a focus.  It’s entirely possible,” Dawn said.  (And really, the drive is not that bad.  Pleasant surroundings and a lack of traffic made the excursion worth the drive.)  For those of you who are looking to shop via the interweb, Dawn mentioned online shopping will launch this fall.

As we made our way around the store, Dawn pointed out that there is something for everyone: whether you are male or female, a trendsetter or classic sophisticate, a woman with curves, an expectant mommy or a style-savvy kid, ‘tween or teen, H&M has something for you.

“We want you to dress your whole family here; you can wear H&M from childhood through adulthood,” Dawn said. Well-made accessories – including coordinating jewelry, eyewear, handbag, shoes, hats and scarves – for both sexes and all ages will complete a look.  “We have 140 designers who design specifically for us,” Dawn revealed.  “You really won’t find knockoffs of other designers here.  We do everything in-house, which allows us to offer everything at a great price.”

And what prices!  From denim starting at $9.95 to “Opening Offer” pieces marked down to $7 plus mix and match swimwear starting at $4.95, the pricing was unbelievable.

As we completed the tour, the crowd outside was showing off “moves like Jagger” and began an impromptu Cupid Shuffle.  As the minutes wound down to the noon ribbon-cutting, I got to talk to Cantrice, a member of the H&M Crew who helped set up the store, who has worked with the company 9 years.  What makes H&M special to her?

“I have a home store [in Baltimore], but I have the pleasure of going to store openings.  H&M puts a lot into developing their employees.  And they’re fashion-forward.   I shopped at the H&M in NYC when it first opened in the US, and I still wear those clothes.  They wash well, they wear well and most of H&M’s pieces are timeless,” she said.

The H&M crew lined the store’s main floor, and then the “running of the shoppers” commenced.  What began as a dull roar and a frenzy of organized chaos eventually quieted to a jumble of steadily moving teens, young professionals, college students, employees shopping on their lunch breaks, and new moms several hours later.  A few were heard at the store’s entry  making hurried calls home for more capital, and others braved the long lines for the dressing rooms and cash registers.

I made it out alive at 3:30, with a chic caftan ($34.95) for my mom and a color-blocked clutch ($17.95) and pair of earrings ($7.95) for myself.

“We’ll be back tomorrow,” Devin promised.

Stay tuned for more photos!!!
