Necessity is the mother of invention.

This is another “No.”

I Wanna Know what made singer-songwriter Joe think this ensemble was okay? Of All The Things one could choose to wear, why this? If you Don’t Wanna Be (mistaken for) a Player, guys, this isn’t the look.

There are better ways to incorporate color ad print into your wardrobe; this just isn’t one of them. The open neckline and pants from the upholstery department at Calico Corners are an assault on the eyes. Please don’t try this at home, gentlemen.

New Orleans Owes Me Nothing.

French Quarter Festival, New Orleans, April 2014.

This weekend was full of food, family and fun at the French Quarter Fest! Entry to the 31st annual festival, held in the heart of the French Quarter, was free! I packed in as much activity as I could – enjoying a scenic streetcar ride to the Vieux Carre, walking the streets and taking in the sights and sounds and sipping on a daiquiri! And we met a Mardi Gras Indian!

Tips for enjoying the Festival:

Take plenty of cash, as several vendors did not take cards. Wear comfortable shoes, since you’ll be doing plenty of walking on streets that are centuries-old. It’s not chic hobbling on cobblestones! Stay hydrated and take sunscreen; you don’t want to pass out or get sunburned! Above all, take an appetite for fun and be ready for an impromptu second line, as well as lines/crowds just about everywhere. But this is the Big Easy and no one is in a rush, so relax and laissez les bon temps rouler!

Here are some of my finds that you might enjoy:

Best Daiquiri: Tropical Colada/Daiquiri Chef
Best Oysters: Royal House (served chargrilled)
Best Breakfast: Anita’s Grill (try the liver and onions with hashbrowns!)
Best Shopping: The French Market, of course! I bought pralines at Southern Candymakers and some beaded slippers at Oriental Trading, one of the umpteen vendors in the open-air market. Skip the portapotty: Harrah’s has a super-clean ladies room, as does the Jackson Brewery! (You’re welcome!)

We’re just here for Best Supporting Actress winner Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave), in a custom ice blue Prada pleated gown and gold and diamond headband by Fred Leighton.

As she so eloquently stated in her acceptance speech, “No matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.” Go forth and dream as big as you can, darlings!

ICYMI: Macy’s ‘Eras of Black Style’ Event

Last Saturday’s Eras of Black Style event at Macy’s/Riverchase Galleria was amazing! I had an awesome time from beginning to end!

It was such a treat being outfitted by celeb stylist Ryan Christopher and getting to talk style with Ebony Hall , co-anchor of ABC 33/40’s  Good Morning Alabama, Miss Black US Ambassador Jazmine Scroggins and Montgomery fashion designer and consultant Perry Varner!  I even got a little emotional when I was asked to share my journey as a fashion blogger.

It was such an honor to be asked to participate, and I enjoyed the Nathifa Dance Company’s spirited performance; enjoy the photos!

*What I wore: a Bar III colorblocked dress that I loved so much I took it home (check stores; not available online), Jessica Simpson ‘Cendini’ heels, a Vince Camuto chain link toggle bracelet and Jessica Simpson hoop earrings (similar, here).

Best-dressed: Super Bowl XLVIII

Y’all know when Broadway Joe shows up, he shows out! Yesterday was no exception, as the University of Alabama grad appeared at the Super Bowl to handle the coin toss before the face-off between the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos. Today we honor Mr. Joe Namath’s sartorial choices with a look at the very best of his winter style statements. We do love our fur coats!

And warm wishes to everyone in Birmingham who survived last week’s “light dusting”….bring on Spring!

Road Tripping: Scottsboro’s Unclaimed Baggage Center

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STsAOHNuQnA

If you know me, you know I LIVE for fabulosity at a fraction of the price. I also love a road trip. So traveling to Scottsboro to spend a day treasure hunting at the Unclaimed Baggage Center (UBC) was right up my alley. I’d heard bits and pieces about this amazing place – where travelers’ unclaimed items wind up for sale – but there’s nothing like seeing it for yourself: it’s truly what Vogue has called a “fashion fool’s paradise.” Why?

For one thing, it’s HUGE: 40,000 square feet, to be exact. New and gently loved footwear (Christian Louboutin, anyone?), formalwear (one bargain-savvy bride outfitted herself and her bridesmaids at UBC) and casual clothing for the whole family, fine jewelry, sporting goods, electronics (I’m talking iPhones, iPads, and DSLR cameras, darlings) and more can be found within the space, at 30-80% off retail prices (you do the math). But you’re not scooping up dirty clothes or smartphones with someone else’s data. Items are thoroughly cleaned, tested and repaired (if necessary and possible) before they hit the shelves and racks. Offerings change frequently, and part of the fun in shopping is you never know exactly what you will find. What isn’t sold – or what doesn’t make it to the salesfloor at all – is repurposed or donated. The strangest item I saw (which is part of UBC’s permanent collection) was definitely the Hoggle, a huge muppet from the movie Labyrinth.

A few words of advice: if you snag something you love, buy it; leave it and it might not be there when you return! I am KICKING myself for not grabbing the Louis Vuitton clutch someone else snagged when I moved on to another rack. Also, wear comfortable shoes, and give yourself time to really dig into the racks. If you get tired, thirsty or need a snack, there’s comfortable seating where you can recharge, and the menu at the onsite Cups Cafe will give you a second wind.

The Unclaimed Baggage Center is located at 509 West Willow Street
, Scottsboro, Alabama. It’s open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm; UCB is closed on Sundays. You can also connect with UBC on Twitter and Facebook.

Happy shopping!

Who wore what, where: 2014 Golden Globes

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

We’re baaa-aack! And we’ve missed you, darlings! We started our year on a decidedly unfabulous note (with the flu), but have recovered just in time for awards season and red carpet shenanigans!

Last night’s Golden Globes were rather dull (we really just tune in for the fashion, anyway), but our red carpet winner SHUT. IT. DOWN. Best Supporting Actress nominee Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) is the hands down winner in this crimson caped gown by Ralph Lauren and Fred Leighton jewels. It’s no secret that Lupita is a fab fashionista: she’s recently been featured on the cover of W and will star in Miu Miu’s 2014 spring ad campaign.

But what on earth was Fashion Police’s George Kotsiopoulous thinking? This look (short pants + tight jacket + bare ankles + weird shoes) is so unflattering, and unappropriate for the occasion. Boo.

Lessons to be learned as we lean into Birmingham’s social season? Don’t be afraid of making a dramatic statement in a bold color, but keep makeup, coif and accessories simple so they don’t overpower your look. But by all means, be appropriate to your event. Dressing down or trying to hard to be “different” will only draw attention to you for all the wrong reasons.

We’re obsessed with…

20131126-114551.jpg

…this Grande Crystal Drops necklace, from J. Crew (now $139.99).

Had Mathilde Loisel – heroine of Guy de Maupassant’s classic short story The Necklace – known such affordable luxury existed, it might have literally changed her life (if you are unfamiliar with the short story, enjoy the recorded version below).

If you have champagne taste on a seltzer budget (or if you simply like well-made, unique accessories at great prices), J. Crew offers unique pieces which add fabulous touches to the simplest of ensembles without breaking the bank, and this exquisite statement necklace is very special.
