Mad Men Season 5 Airs; SCDD Shops!

Mad Men’s highly anticipated, hotly debated Season 5 aired last night and – without giving anything away- it’s safe to say “the time’s, they are [definitely] a-changing.”  SCDD won’t parse the details and speculate about future plot twists here (that could go on forever, as internet chatter about the newest season hit fever pitch the past few months).  Nay, we’ll celebrate the show’s pitch-perfect attention to detail.  I squealed out loud when I saw little Sally Draper’s sunshine yellow Springmaid bed sheets; my parents had the exact same set which they received as a wedding gift.  Want a set of your own?  Check them out on Etsy HERE (alas, this listing ’tis only the flat sheet).

What other era-perfect goodies did I browse?  How about Joan Holloway Harris’ signature statement piece: the gold pen necklace?  Femme fatale attitude sold separately.  Or how about that super chic pram she strolled her new baby around town in?  This Silver Cross Balmoral pram sold by Posh Tots “combines stately elegance with an air of true nostalgia” and retails for $3,995 (although it’s missing the little privacy curtain).

In the age of iPhones, crackberries and Androids, how many of us maintain a hardcopy desk calendar or handwritten schedule?  Pete’s secretary Clara had a nifty trifold version, and Kate Spade periodically offers a similar pink version. This one is on Ebay.  Or might you be interested in playing solitaire with a real deck of cards for a change?

Wondering what to get the man who has everything (including a secret identity)? Then a pure badger shaving brush or silver-topped walking stick may be right up your man’s sartorial alley. And if you’re planning to serenade him with his own special “Zou Bisou Bisou” moment, this dress by Posh Girl Vintage is close-up ready.

For more Mad Men clothing and cosmetics, check out the collections at Banana Republic and Estee Lauder.

I have an early meeting with Coca Cola on Staten Island,

Spring Forward with C.Wonder

March came in like a lion with its rainy weather, but the lovely spring days we’re experiencing this week are making me long for something other than filmy sundresses and cute sandals.  While some of you enjoy Spring Break, others are toiling away on their keyboards (ahem!).  Since I’m not scooting around on a Vespa for a Roman holiday (sigh!), I came up with a chic alternative. I saw this bike on CWonder.com and suddenly imagined myself gliding down the  sidewalk on Second Avenue North to run into Charm or in downtown Homewood to pop into Molly Green, all while lowering my carbon footprint.  Although I haven’t actually been on a bike since I was 12 and my allergies usually have me hotfooting it indoors, this fuchsia beauty (a unisex model which also comes in navy and orange) is enough to make me break out the Keds and hit the pavement.  Even better, the online emporium also offers a chic matching helmet, wicker basket,  bell, and bike lock!

C. Wonder, which was founded by Tory Burch’s former husband Christopher Burch, is built on the premise that every woman deserves a dose of “wonder.”  Its flagship store opened in New York this past October  (offering shoppers onsite monogramming and dressing rooms in which the music and lighting can be adjusted), and I  am loving everything it offers: clothing, shoes, jewelry and home decor.

Happy Spring!

Estee Lauder debuts Mad Men Line March 18

Are you as excited as I am about Mad Men’s return to the airwaves on March 25?!  (Okay, maybe you aren’t planning to wear mid-century modern and drink a Manhattan when the fifth season airs.) The characters have inspired a limited edition Banana Republic collection, been immortalized by Barbie and hipsters everywhere, and now in conjunction with the season’s launch, Estee Lauder is releasing a Mad Men-themed cosmetics collection.  The brand will include lipstick and rouge (i.e. blush) in swinging retro glam shades of cherry and evening rose that invite wearers to “shake, stir, [and] seduce.”  The items are prettily packaged in vintage gilt holders; whether you’re a Betty, Joan or Peggy you will definitely look chic when you whisk them out of your pocketbook (er, handbag)!

What better brand to wear to give your Don or Roger a little kiss?

Lights, Camera, Fashion: BFW 2012

Laura Kathryn for Birmingham Fashion Week 2012

It was standing room only under the white tent and high-wattage lights set up in Pepper Place for the second night of Birmingham Fashion Week.  Lesson number one? Don’t wear four inch, patent leather, pointy-toed mules to a fashion show where you’ll be shifting your weight on what’s basically a toothpick for 2 and half hours.  By 7:10 PM my feet were begging for mercy. Tomorrow night? I’ll be in flats.

The night’s festivities began with a procession of entries from the college-level Emerging Designer and junior high and high school-level Rising Design Star competitions.  Standouts  included Travis Mackey, whose avant garde designs and attention to detail were different from anything else on the runway, featuring corset detailing, mutton sleeves and stark colors.  Mackey advanced to the next phase of the Emerging Designer competition.

The night also featured selections from local women’s boutiques SOCA and Laura Kathryn.  I LOVED the very wearable cheetah-print suit with short bottoms and apricot blouse, which will be perfect for summer date nights and cocktails.

Finally it was time for the featured designers: William Bradley (last year’s Emerging Design winner), Southern Proper and Annie Griffin.  Bradley’s prairie-chic, flowing creations had  the feel of vintage Ralph Lauren in the fabrication and silhuoettes.  Bradley counts Chanel as a major historical icon and noted, “[I’m trying] to create a story.”  The pieces had a very editorial feel; Bradley should concentrate on fabric choice and fit as he progresses.  This year has been a whirlwind; his spring collection was picked up by Private Gallery and will be in their stores in May.

Southern Proper’s brightly colored, preppy accessories incorporated menswear from Peter Millar.  The line is

available locally at Remon’s and at the Birmingham Country Club, and there are plans to partner with J. Crew on a men’s wedding bow tie line.  [4:07 PM: I have edited this review to remove my previous enthusiasm for the line.  After further reviewing Southern Proper’s website in detail today, I was dismayed to see a Cotton Pickin’-themed print.  I can appreciate the seersucker and bucks look for men but I don’t support anything that harkens to “plantation chic.”]

Annie Griffin closed the show with feminine separates in muted solids and prints.  The line also made use of color-blocking, which is a major Spring 2012 trend.  The line is extremely wearable and appeals to women who appreciate the retro flair, the soft touches and laidback silhuoettes.
