Do you know where you’re going to?

Mahogany – an over-the-top Diana Ross vehicle from 1975 and one of my all-time favorite movies – is airing tonight at 8 PM Central on Bounce TV! The wigs, the glamour, the drama! The Billy Dee Williams of it all! YES, darlings! *snaps fingers*

Seriously, there is some disco-fantastic fashion and a great storyline in this film. “The Boss” plays Tracy Chambers, a go-getter who works her way up from salesgirl to secretary to fashion muse and designer in Rome and finds out whether success without true love is worth it in the end. I’m going to watch in a chiffon caftan and bouffant hair. That seems only appropriate.

Fun fact: Mahogany was shot partially in Chicago’s State Street Marshall Fields, which is now a Macy’s flagship store.

Hmmm

Meggings for Spring?

Meet designer Donald Pliner at Belk

Donald Pliner will appear at Belk at the Summit this Saturday, March 30 in the Ladies Shoe Department from 11 AM-4 PM!  During the appearance he will showcase (and sign!) pieces from his spring collection.  Billed as “chic, evocative and exotic,” Mr. Pliner’s line is known for luxe materials and fine details.  It’s almost sandal season and we’re currently obsessed with the Tiam, a fabulous crepe espadrille with a 4 1/2 inch wedge heel and braided detail!

About Donald Pliner: “The Donald J Pliner Company has built a reputation for its innovative materials and quality craftsmanship in men’s and women’s luxury footwear and accessories. Since 1989, the brand has been known for the combination of fashion, fit and comfort that embodies every design. Donald J Pliner products are sold nationwide in select specialty stores and upscale department stores including Nordstrom, Dillard’s and Bloomingdale’s, and at the company’s five retail stores (Aventura, Coral Gables, Houston, Las Vegas, San Jose).”

The public is invited to attend this free event and refreshments will be served.

Product review: Essie’s ‘Tart Deco’

Even though most of us are still in tights and coats thanks to this wacky weather (temps above 55 degrees, where are you?!), I’m ushering in spring with Essie’s ‘Tart Deco’ nail polish. This color was originally released as part of Essie’s ‘The Art of Spring’ collection in 2010. I love a bright pop of coral, and this which glides on easily and without streaking; it has a satin finish. Something about it just said “Wear me with short, sundresses and sandals!” when I saw it in Target, which has an amazing selection of nail polish. Essie costs $7-8 per bottle, and comes in a variety of bright and subtle shades and finishes. I forgot to get a bottle of my usual fast drying topcoat for this DIY manicure, but here’s a little secret: LA Color’s Rapid Dry nail treatment works just as well in a pinch, and can be found at Dollar Tree!

You just never know…

Chick Stole My Look: Ashlee Simpson

20130326-083313.jpgWhile I was off maxing and relaxing, Ashlee Simpson showed up at SouthPark Mall in Charlotte, NC in the same dress I rocked at the Macy’s Prom Event! Does she read this blog??? And did she also hijack my pose? The only difference in dresses is she removed one layer of the skirt.

Okay, okay…maybe the fact that her sister designed the Spring-ready “Extollook had something to do with it. This flouncy, flirty look with abstract print, cap sleeves and button placket back is fit for a variety of occasions and physiques. But just for fun, (and because I love E!’s Fashion Police feature): who rocked it best? Vote below!

Or, in which I relax, relate and release –

For the past few weeks, I’ve had a serious case of the uglies. You know. The “I hate my hair, I hate my clothes, I hate my look”…which can easily spiral into “I hate my life” if left unchecked. A monster allergy attack left me with a red nose and watery eyes, my inability to adjust to springing forward stamped dark circles under my eyes, and I was burnt out on just about everything and everyone, including myself. Then I had the worst outbreak of acne I’ve had…well, EVER.  And I’m well past puberty. Ugh!

So.

Last week I booked a stay-cation and a first class ticket on the “Get Your Life” express.  For the first time in a long time, I did nothing but think. I didn’t blog, I didn’t plan outfits or outings, I didn’t clean house or cook or make groceries or strategize or network. I stopped obsessing over the million little things I should be doing, or could be doing (if I cloned myself ten times). I gave myself the thing that’s the most difficult for me:  a break from everything, including my to-do list and my expectations.

This week, I feel better. My skin is clearing up, a trip to Alabama Allergy and Asthma Center means I can breathe without leaving a trail of Kleenex behind me (thank you, Dr. Sikora) and I don’t look quite so red and puffy, and several days of meditation and prayer have me refocused on the things I can control (my hair, my closet) and content about the things I can’t (pretty much everything else). And most of all, I came away grateful: not everyone gets the opportunity to do what they love, and I’m wasting valuable time looking at the glass half-empty, or in squeezing in more than it’s advisable for one human to attempt without a caffeine IV or help.  Last night, I got the most refreshing beauty sleep I’ve had in six months.  I surrendered my invisible plane, indestructible bracelets and lasso of truth for one week, and I’m the better for it.  Sequin toss for Alexis!

Pressing the “pause” button to relax, relate, and release for a week, a day, or even an hour is a great way to adjust your attitude and approach….and get back in the game ready to play. Not just ready to play, ready to win – at whatever fabulous goal you have on your radar.

In the meantime, Beyonce instructed us all to do an act of worship to her and announced both her H&M Summer Collection  and EPIC trailer (sounds like she could use a break too, no?) and I found out Nordstrom Rack opens on 280 on May 16! I also found out wedge sneakers do nothing for me (but that’s a post for another day). And have you heard Angela Davis AND Esperanza Spalding are coming to Birmingham?!

I’ve missed you, darlings.
