Belk announces 125th Anniversary celebration plans

Did you know that Belk – your destination for “modern Southern style” – turns 125 this year (on May 29)? How fabulous is that? And the family-owned retailer is ready to celebrate in a very big way, which means great things for its customers and the community at large.

I had the privilege of attending Belk’s Media breakfast yesterday, where I was seated right next to President and COO Mr. Johnny Belk himself! Mr. Belk spoke candidly about the plans to celebrate this special anniversary by opening more flagship stores, expanding private labels like Cynthia/Cynthia Rowley and Cam Newton, and continuing their commitment to community service by giving back to the local communities through “125 Days of Service,” its $2 million dollar commitment to helping makeover schools with the Points of Light Institute.

Mr. Belk also shared with us that Belk has major plans to improve the store’s online and in-store shopping experience to meet the demands of customers who are shopping in a variety of ways.

And if you’re shopping with Belk you’re going to love the 125 exclusive products Belk will have available from designers such as Michael Kors and Jessica Simpson, as well as 125 Days of Prizes, during which time Belk will award a prize valued from $500-$6,500 every day. Customers can register on Belk’s Facebook page or on belk125prizes.com. And yes, there’s more: designers like Cynthia Rowley and the Southern Design Showcase winners (whose collections will be featured online and in stores) will make appearances at in-store events!

Stay tuned for more details regarding Belk’s 125th anniversary!

Macy’s offered prom shoppers the magic of a Macy’s prom experience last weekend at the Riverchase Galleria location, with a fashion show featuring their latest dresses, etiquette tips for the big night, cupcakes from Dreamcakes, and mini-makeovers courtesy of Clinique and Fashion Fair!  I had a blast hosting the event, with the help of party entertainer Danny Brewer of Danny Brewer Live.  If you’re looking for something long, short or in-between, on trend and at a great price, be sure to check out their m style lab on the first floor.  The shoes with each look were from the ladies’ shoe department on the second floor, with everything from a pop of color, sparkled, studded, or neutral featured – great for prom and beyond!

The team at Macy’s was lovely enough to let me model a look from their Social Department on the second floor; I wore a spring look with a fun floral print by Jessica Simpson (not available online) and nude patent Chinese Laundry peep-toes.  I stayed to shop a little after the show and took home the dress I wore, plus one more!

Looking for a super-cute way to ask someone to the prom? Make sure you see the “Prom?” cupcake Ms. Moon provided. All you have to do is hand one to your intended date – much more chic than tweeting or sending him or her a text!

Thank you, Macy’s!

Then and now: the more things change…

True story: I didn’t go to the prom. But my first formal “fashion moment” happened in high school, when I was invited to a ball in New Orleans.

My mother and I shopped for my dress at Cordova Mall in Pensacola, FL and found “the one” at The Body Shop (yes, they used to sell formal wear). The floor length, fully bedazzled crimson gown had a high neck, front slit and a jazzy keyhole opening.

We found red  Caparros slippers at Shoe Station in Mobile (which I still have), a matching tasseled red evening bag at the Accessory Lady in New Orleans and I raided my mom’s jewelry box.  My mother set my hair and did my makeup. The look wasn’t finished without customizing the dress: she stitched a sheer modesty panel over the front so I wasn’t exposed.

Fast forward a few years and I still absolutely love getting dressed up…the fancier the event, the better! You’ll see my style hasn’t changed: I still shop everywhere to complete a look, and I still love the drama of a bedazzled gown! This past Saturday I altered my vintage stunner from Etsy retailer Call Me Chula to make it fit tighter in the bodice and sleeves. I added a pop of coral with Essie’s “Tart Deco” nail polish and MAC’s Cremesheen Glass in “Richer, Lusher”and as you can see I still love my curls, which I fluffed myself. Although I wear less makeup than I used to, my after -ive absolute must-have are my false eyelashes! My purse was from Tarjhay, and my Badgely Mischka satin peep-toes were from DSW.

Are you headed to prom and ready to make your own fashion statement? Then you don’t want to miss the Macy’s Prom Shopping event this Saturday at the Riverchase Galleria at 2 PM! Join me for prom fashion and etiquette tips, plus mini-makeovers from Fashion Fair and Clinique, and treats from Dreamcakes!

Meet designer Faith Thornburg at Belk this Sunday!

Meet Savannah-based designer Faith Thornburg, a 2012 Belk Southern Designer Showcase winner, at Belk at the Summit on Sunday, February 24, from 1 pm to 4 pm! The designer of one-of-a-kind bridal gowns will meet with customers at Belk at the Summit, discuss their dream wedding dress and sketch her ideas for each dress in store. From that sketch, Thornburg will create a custom gown that the customer will pick up at their local Belk store upon completion. Thornburg will showcase sample dresses while light appetizers and refreshments are served.

Faith works with clients to create custom wedding gowns, eveningwear, and cocktail dresses, giving her the chance to be a part of a special moment in each woman’s life. She has shown collections at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City (featured in ELLE Magazine) and Charleston Fashion Week in Charleston, S.C. Thornburg is a graduate of Savannah College of Art & Design. Same Chic Different Day is pleased to bring you this interview with her.

Did you start with bridal gowns? When I decided to go into fashion, I never dreamed of bridal being where I’d end up. My intentions were to go into ready-to-wear, but once I started school, I just didn’t feel passionate enough to do that for the rest of my life. I thought about switching my major to something else but then I discovered the whimsy of bridal and instantly fell in love! Bridal became more than a passion, and from then on out, I used my projects at SCAD to learn more and more about the industry and sought out designers and retailers to gain experience.

Is your life in hyper-drive right now?
Hyper-drive is an understatement! I’m constantly learning new things everyday, doing new research, looking for new ideas and inspiration, and working on custom dresses, all while running a business! I have the best job in the world, even if it means staying up all night to get things done!

What’s the most in-demand feature for bridal gowns right now? Every bride is different and is looking for something that makes her dress unique. I tell everyone all the time that the days of the cookie-cutter bride are gone (and thank God)! The best way to personalize a dress and make it special is to accessorize. A simple velvet sash can add a ton of personality and spice up an otherwise boring dress. Add some “bling” from a family heirloom and now you’ve got a regal dress ready for the aisle. Another “trend” I’ve seen is having two dresses, a gown for the ceremony and a party dress for the reception. To accommodate this, many dresses in my collection are shorter and versatile so a bride can purchase for the wedding and use again for a later event.

Do you ever meet with a bride who isn’t really sure what she’s looking for yet and how do you guide those appointments? This happens a lot. The best advice I can give a bride is to just try on various styles and be open minded. She won’t really get an idea of what she likes until she puts it on. Then we can determine what styles, shapes, fabrics, etc. she likes better and go from there.
Do you have an absolute favorite gown you’ve designed so far and do you have a most memorable “famous” wedding dress? Picking a favorite would be like picking a favorite child! I have great memories with each custom dress I’ve done, and that’s what I cherish most. From the dresses in my collection though, I just can’t determine my all time favorite! As far as “famous” wedding dresses go, I will forever love the dress that was worn by Jane McNeil in 1953. I have a picture of her walking into the church with the paparazzi behind her that I could stare at for days! I love the veil that Jane wore so much that it’s now a part of my collection!
What’s next for Faith Thornburg? My next big step is to show at market in the Fall and start working with bridal boutiques all over the country. Seeing my designs hanging in boutiques everywhere is my new big dream.

Oh, you didn’t make it to NYFW either?

No worries, darlings! You know we’ve got you covered!

Thanks to New York Magazine, I can watch Michael Kors, Marchesa, Alexander Wang and more show at their Fall 2013 ready-to-wear collections from the comfort of my home, in my pajamas!  I might even put on my aviators to get in the mood!  And you can, too: click HERE to view the hautest shows scheduled through today.  Be sure to check out “A-Z Shows” to see runway videos of the collections presented…with details, accessories and photos from backstage and the front row!

It’s Throwback Thursday! Remember these?

80scharmnecklace

Raise your hand if you had one (or more) of these colorful plastic charm necklaces or bracelets in the ’80s.  For the life of me, I can’t remember where mine came from (probably Shoes Two, Boo’s, Holiday or Crib to College) but I loved it! Just looking at this photo makes me miss Keds, side ponies, Esprit and my Sweet Valley High board game (which is going for $165 on Amazon.com… Mom, where is mine?)!

Charm bracelets and necklaces remain a chic – and well, charming – way to show off your interests and capture significant memories or milestones, no matter how you choose to accessorize them. If you’re feeling particularly nostalgic, you can find 1980s charms and completed necklaces and bracelets on Etsy.  You might also choose an heirloom or vintage piece in gold or sterling silver (which can be very pricey!). Or you might select one from Pandora, Juicy Couture (which sells charms and starter or complete bracelets) or Tiffany (and who wouldn’t love something in a little blue box?).

P.S. Have you entered our Belk Beauty Giveaway? A winner will be chosen tomorrow!

What’s in your closet?

I have a friend (who shall remain nameless), who’s holding on to some stuff. You know, stuff: dropwaist, large-collared dresses from the 1980s, suits with shoulder pads, boxes and boxes of shoes she never wears, hanger after hanger of black pants.  Sentimental pieces that recall beautiful memories, ill-considered fast fashion purchases that were worn once and shoved to the back of the closet and forgotten (and now the trend has passed), skirt and dresses she’ll wear when she loses that last ten pounds.

Sound familiar?

KimK_closet2

If your closets are bursting at the seams with pieces that need to be tossed or archived, we need to talk.  If you’re not wearing it, why are you keeping it?  You shouldn’t waste valuable real estate in your closet with items that are out of style, no longer your size, no longer fit your lifestyle, or that don’t make you happy to wear.  It happens to the best of us (um, I’m holding on to dresses for the daughter I don’t even have yet), including Kim Kardashian, who received an intervention from Kanye:

You can’t make room for looks that truly flatter you and fit you now if you’re holding on to things that don’t.  Need someone to hold your hand and help you purge? Call me.

Weekend Fab: Sickle Cell Gala supports ongoing research

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending one of Birmingham’s premiere social events: “Showtime Birmingham Style,” in support of the Sickle Cell Foundation. The Foundation “was established in 1978 for the purpose of advocating and improving the quality of health, life and services for individuals affected by sickle cell disease and related conditions in central Alabama, while promoting the search for a cure for all people in the world with sickle cell disease.” Executive Director Sharon B. Lewis, this year’s chairwoman Brenda M. Brantley and celebrity host Nicole Ari Parker made this year’s gala a truly magical event.

After a red carpet pre-gala reception, guests enjoyed remarks from Dr. Tim Townes, UAB Chair of the Department of Biochemistry/Molecular Genetics, whose research may lead to a cure for the disease. Next, Fox 6’s Jeh Jeh Pruitt and Mickey Ferguson took the stage as masters of ceremony and ongoing comic relief. After greetings from Mayor William Bell, Congresswoman Terri Sewell and acknowledgments from President of the Board of Directors Michael H. Bell, Ms. Lewis, and Ms. Brantley, guests enjoyed a dinner of barbecue shrimp and grits, Southern fried chicken and sauteed spinach.

This year’s celebrity showcase did not disappoint and featured some hidden Birmingham-area talent: highlights included Birmingham Fire Chief Ivor Brooks, Ernest Miller and Lamont Saffo’s rendition of “Let’s Just Kiss and Say Goodbye” by The Manhattans, City Councilman Jonathan F. Austin’s take on Barry White’s “Practice What You Preach,” accompanied by Courtney G. French of Fuston, Petway and French, and Charlie Waldrep, Randy Jones, Jim Folsom and Tommy Spina’s lively medley of “Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch” and “The Duke of Earl.”

The night’s popular amateur talent feature wowed the audience with R&B, rap and soul. It included Abijah Cunningham’s first place version of Patti Labelle’s “If Only You Knew,” Prince’s “The Beautiful Ones” performed by second place winner El Paso Williams, and “OG” Gregory Johnson’s third place take on “Cruisin’ ” by Smokey Robinson.

This was also a night for fabulous black-tie fashion, and you know I love to get fab for a great cause! So what did I wear? An apricot and cream vintage sequined and belted silk sheath from Dallas’ Rummage Vintage, with a gold snakeskin miniaudiere, and barely-there PVC Manolo Blahniks. I wore my hair in a simple topknot, and for a little pizazz I also tried “junk nails,” which added sparkling embellishments to my manicure.

Surprise guest of the night? Buffalo Bills’ defensive tackle (and former Alabama gamechanger) Marcell Dareus, who made an impromptu pledge of support to the Sickle Cell Foundation, and was sweet enough to pose with me! Isn’t he dapper?

BB&T of Alabama was this year’s title sponsor, and the 2014 “It’s Showtime! Birmingham Style”chairman will be Charlie Waldrep, of Waldrep, Stewart and Kendrick.
