Tails in the Trails event lets guests walk on the wild side

Note to self: gold stilettos sandals were not made for trekking through the Trails of Africa.

But I soldiered on anyway, and thoroughly enjoyed last night’s “Tails in the Trails” event hosted by the Birmingham Zoo’s Junior Board and Donohoo Auto. The second annual event  benefited the Zoo’s summer camps for kids, and allowed guests to visit “one trail; three different perspectives” with the Zoo’s African elephants.  Animal handlers were along the trail as well; at the entrance to the exhibit I got up close and personal with a barn owl (thankfully I missed the handler who walked around showing off the snake!).

Further up, guests were treated to the song styling of  two-man acoustic band Big Town Run on guitar and banjo in the Hugh Kaul Indaba, a covered pavilion and open area which provided a great atmosphere to mingle, enjoy the music and observe the animals. The food was tasty; I enjoyed the passed  hors d’oeuvres, particularly the tomato-mozzarella bruschetta bites and the lamb with feta and mint in crisp, flaky phyllo baskets. It was an evening of “firsts”: I’d never tasted lamb, and the band had never played for elephants before!  I passed on the buffet, although it included a carving station and received a hearty thumbs up from a guest seated near me.

After enjoying the treats, I made my way up to an eleven-year-old elephant and got to feed her apples.

How cute are these centerpieces: a paper rhino grazing on a daisy-strewn bed of grass!

It was a lovely evening to support the Zoo, and thankfully the shady and pleasant weather made for the perfect atmosphere for people (and animal!) watching.  Plus I got a cool sticker from a friendly dude at Avondale Brewing Company. (Does one ever get too old for stickers? I think not.  The sticker features their mascot, Miss Fancy the Elephant.)  And the band was great; a particular hit was their rousing version of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Bad Moon Rising.”

Go check out the Trails of Africa exhibit (but leave your heels at home, ladies).  As President of the Junior Board Austin Davis noted, it is indeed a cool venue…and you may get to feed the elephants too!  And if you’re interested in supporting the zoo’s mission, why not adopt an animal?

What’s in my purse?

It’s no secret that I love Aveda’s products.  I highly recommend them for recreating a spa-like experience in your own boudoir.  But what’s another must-have that I carry around every day and have in my car for emergencies? Their Hand Relief.

It’s a hydrating cream  for stressed skin that soothes and smoothes my hands thanks to “plant emollients, humectants, exfoliating fruit acids and antioxidants including vitamins A and E”. It’s really a luxurious moisturizing treatment; it even has licorice root extract to brighten any discoloration.  Aveda Hand Relief leaves my hands moisturized and soft (without a sticky or greasy residue).  And its pleasant yet unobtrusive  scent (with notes of orange and lavender) is unisex and doesn’t interfere with perfumes (or induce allergies!).

A 4. 2 ounce tube costs $20, and a little goes a long way.  Get some! (There’s also a Foot Relief, but I’ve yet to try it.  I’m old school: to moisturize my feet I coat them with Vaseline and slip on a pair of thick socks.)

New Edition concert sends audience down Memory Lane

Frugalista tip  of the day?  Make sure you are connected to your favorite local news sources, be they newspapers, magazines, or blogs, because you never know when they will offer a fab giveaway!  This is how yours truly ended up ten rows away from New Edition’s 30th Anniversary Reunion Tour at Oak Mountain Amphitheatre last night (thank you WELD!).  Savings?  At least $102.05 per ticket plus the cost of VIP lounge and VIP parking access!

This was my first visit to the Oak Mountain venue, and although the night air grew chilly, the crowd was boisterous and the open air was refreshing.  I had no trouble getting to my seat and settled in to enjoy the comedy stylings of Lightfoot (who does an extremely funny impersonation of Michael Jackson) as well as KISS 98.7 DJ Chris Coleman’s skills on the turntables.  Both kept the audience’s anticipation of the main act up; if you weren’t laughing, you were dancing to some great hits.  Lightfoot announced the headlining comedian, Earthquake, whose “These ain’t jokes” routine never gets old; he will appear at the Stardome Memorial Day weekend.

When Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph AND Johnny finally appeared – in dapper, Rat Packish burgundy jackets with black silk pocket squares, crisp white shirts, and black slacks, fedoras and dark shades – the crowd was ready.  As they launched into hits ranging from “Count Me Out,” “Mr. Telephone Man,” and “Candy Girl”  to  “If It Isn’t Love,”  “You’re Not my Kind of Girl” and “Can You Stand the Rain,” I have to say this ’80s baby felt transported back in time,  to side ponytails , tight-rolled jeans and rotary phones (sigh).  The guys danced with verve and were playful with the audience.  During the breaks they cracked jokes; Bobby offered heartfelt testimony about the loss of Whitney Houston as well as his ongoing commitment to sobriety from narcotics.  Bobby’s departure from the group was even lightheartedly addressed and led to an animated “dance off” to see if he could still keep up with the group’s trademark steps.

He could.

An additional treat?  The audience got to hear the members’ hits from their solo and side group projects: Johnny Gill performed “My, My, My” (while tossing long-stemmed red roses into the audience, no less) and his newer song “In the Mood” (and ran up and down the front rows), Bell Biv Devoe performed “Poison,” Ralph Tresvant sang “Sensitivity,” and Bobby sang fan favorites ” My Prerogative”  and “Tenderoni.”

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention their funky band and DJ Shakim, who moved the crowd to their feet doing old-school dances like the Prep, the Wop, and the Cabbage Patch (watch a hilarious demonstration of those dances HERE).

By the end of the night I had lost the hearing in one ear (it still hadn’t “popped” as of this morning),  my voice was hoarse from screaming and singing at the top of my lungs, and my feet were in serious pain from teetering on stilettos while I busted a move.

A fab night, indeed.

Ask Alexis: Full-Figured and Fabulous

A fabulous reader and former co-worker recently asked me for options for plus size figures.

My advice? No matter what size you are, buy items that fit your body and your lifestyle.  Clothes that are too tight or too loose are unflattering, no matter where you fall on the scale.  Play up the features you love: a tiny waist, to-die-for legs, and elegant neck or lovely shoulders.  If you need shapewear to help smooth your silhouette, by all means go for it.  And be sure your bra fits!  Take advantage of the complimentary fittings offered at Victoria’s Secret and buy underpinnings that support your curves.

Draped and flowy maxi dresses are fine but don’t be afraid to show your curves! Try belting them to emphasize your waist.  If you have a classic coke-bottle shape, work a pencil skirt, or look for classic sheath dresses (also known as wiggle dresses) a la Mad Men’s Joan Holloway or Marilyn Monroe.  These dresses celebrate a fuller figure; check out Monif C’s Whitley” dress.  I advise against box pleats, bows or bulky pockets at the hip; sometimes they can add more visual weight to your look.  I suggest opting for softer pleats and gathering, as well as ruching.  Ruching is great because it camouflages problem areas and can create an hourglass figure.

When buying denim, make sure the hem falls long enough to cover about half of your shoes’ heel, and try fabrics with a touch of stretch.  Looking for a pair made to flatter curves? Check out Cj by Cookie Johnson (founded by Magic Johnsons’ wife and Hunstville native Cookie Johnson), which “offers more room in the thighs and derriere and comes up a bit higher in the back than most lines.”  Watch for waistbands that gap on pants; if something fits perfectly  in the rear and leg, have the waist taken in by a tailor.  Looking for flattering leggings? Try  ReDress NYC’s “teggings”: the hybrid tights+leggings boast a “stretchy, wearable fit” and “can be worn all day without slipping or sliding.”  And they’d be super cute under the retailer’s Cozumel Chevron tunic.  Want to emphasize your neckline?  Look for v-necks; they play up your decolletage beautifully.

Check the length of your blouses; they should fall at your hip line.  Blazers continue to be chic for Spring, but make sure you aren’t selecting jackets that are boxy or shapeless; they add pounds!  Check the darts and seaming and be sure the jackets have more of a fitted shape.  Or try an open draped cardigan over a tank: with a necklace and jeans, you’re ready to go.

If you feel unsure about a stiletto heel, try a platform or wedge, like this one from Torrid (they also have cute clothes!).  Shoes should fit comfortably;  your feet shouldn’t bulge or strain against any straps.  No matter what size you are, you should be able to stride or sashay with confidence.  I also suggest opting for belts; they can create the illusion of a waist if you’re “straight up and down” like me, or to accentuate a small one.  And don’t skimp on jewelry: draw the eye to a bold statement necklace, cuff bracelet or earrings (but not all of the above simultaneously).

Hands down some of the cutest pieces I’ve seen thus far are Monif C.’s convertible dresses.  They don’t compromise fabric choice or silhouette and although they range from $195 to $235, the designer promises “infinite possibilities” in terms of styling the dress.  Monif C. also invites you to sign up for their monthly $100 gift certificate giveaway!  The figure-flaunting dresses come in a rainbow of colors and are in a word, glamorous.    I also love ASOS Curve, which offers  well-tailored, trend-conscious pieces.

Finally, check out fab designer Isaac Mizrahi’s tips HERE.  No matter what your size or price point, you shouldn’t have to settle for subpar style.

Fab Find: Monogram Necklaces

Something about monogrammed jewelry just seems to add a touch of class to an outfit, no?

Looking to add a pop of color to your every day style? I am LOVING these super cute and budget friendly acrylic monogram necklaces, available online at Swoozie’s and The Pink Monogram!  Choose your lettering style (script, block, filigree, etc.), pendant color and chain and enter your initials (or those of a loved one!) and you’re good to go! Swoozie’s also has single-letter options available.

For those of you who prefer a more classic look, diamonds may be a girl’s best friend but The Pink Monogram also features a handcut CZ option with the “look and feel of the real thing” minus the pricetag.  Not interested in (faux) bling?  There are rose gold, sterling silver and traditional yellow gold options as well.  Expect to pay somewhere in the three to four figure range for these pieces (acrylic versions are significantly less expensive).  Look around on The Pink Mongram at your leisure; there are some gorgeous pieces!

These dress up even a tee shirt and jeans or are the perfect touch for your simple spring sheaths.  They also make chic keepsakes for grads and bridesmaids – or treat yourself!

Who Wore What Where: 2012 Costume Institute Gala

Chiffon! Feathers!  Silk taffeta! Peplum! DRAMA! Yes, the Costume Institute  Gala was held last night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.   The Costume Institute celebrates and curates “five continents and seven centuries of fashionable dress, regional costumes, and accessories for men, women, and children, from the fifteenth century to the present.”  Last night’s theme “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations” brought out the best (and worst) in some of us.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Who brought the fabulosity? Hands down, our vote goes to Blue Ivy’s baby mama in a gasp-inducing sheer, beaded and feather-festooned Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci. Yes, it’s a risk and it’s over the top and her rear is almost exposed, but this is Beyonce and this is the MET Gala.  Go glam or sit home, folks.  The gown is such a major fashion moment with its embellishment and ombre feathered train that we’re overjoyed the current World’s Most Beautiful Woman kept her hair and makeup subdued. Another showstopper? Florence Welch’s tiered Alexander McQueen WERQ!

Other hits? Rihanna’s crocodile-embossed gown was gorgeous.  I’m also loving the serene and understated soon-to-be Mrs. Justin Timberlake in blush and lime-beaded Prada, and coordinating couple Mr. and Mrs. Tom Brady (Gisele also wore Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci).  Note the dapper evening and footwear Tom’s rocking, gentlemen.

Disappointments? Scarlett Johansson’s Dolce & Gabbana fit and flare and “undone” hair bothered me, and so did Leighton Meester’s tulle tragedy (really, Marchesa?) and Diane Kruger’s purple people eater look.  Le sigh.  And Kristen Stewart (in Balenciaga) looks like she dropped in on her way to Studio 54.  The dual Little House on the Prairie disasters worn by SJP (SHOCKER!) and Mirror, Mirror ingenue Lily Collins are both by Valentino Haute Couture.  Kirsten Dunst and Alicia Keys opted to come straight from the set of Working Girl (I kid, I kid. But really…these are not good looks).   And Coco Rocha…WHY?! I don’t care if your pantsuit did belong to Liz Taylor; it’s a definite “no ma’am.”

Recommended Reading: Vanessa & Helen Williams’ You Have No Idea

Mother-daughter relationships can be fraught with tension, full of shared clothes and closeness, or somewhere in between as the years pass.  Vanessa L. Williams and her mother Helen recount theirs with laughter and candor in the new release You Have No Idea And no – honestly – we never have an idea of what it’s like to grow up in another person’s skin, but the Williams ladies give us a peek into their lives by addressing the turbulent teen years, those scandalous photographs that cost Vanessa her historic Miss America crown, the struggle to overcome past hurts and MUCH more.   Both women’s strong will, no nonsense attitude, frankness and wit are a delight.  This book is a lovely, touching read; the duo show us how to survive controversy, loss and upheaval with style.

Reading it made me reflect on my relationship with my own mother,  and also made me appreciate her sacrifices for me all the more.  It can be difficult to see our parents as individuals with their own desires and needs, and hard to see how a child’s growing independence can strain a relationship.  Although I’m not yet a parent, this book gave me even more empathy for the tremendous responsibilities of those who are.
