Who wore what (and why?) at last night’s Emmy Awards

YES, I saw what Kerry, Julia, Laverne, Angela, Amy, Hayden and Keke wore, but this is my choice for best dressed at last night’s Emmy Awards. Mad Men’s Teyonah Parris is resplendent in this bold ball gown from Christian Siriano’s Spring 2014 collection worn at last nights primetime Emmy Awards. Love the color, silhouette, hair and makeup; she absolutely glows! This is black-tie at its best, without being stuffy or weird. And it’s a sigh of relief from all the sparkle, fit and flare looks and trumpet skirts.

Lena Dunham

Lena Dunham

Which leads me to my worst-dressed choice: Lena Dunham in Giambattista Valli. I love the idea of this confection of a skirt, and I adore the ombré effect, but the fit is way off. This is a daring look that the wearer must OWN. Her posture conveys a feeling of uncertainty. I don’t think Peter Pan collars work on anyone over the age of six, and I wish the bodice had been better fitted to her body. It’s unfortunate.

Why? I’ll wait.

“Mama called…”

I kind of hinted at this on Friday, but I am proud to announce that today is the start of a brand new adventure for me (and that’s an understatement). As I prepare to become a full-fledged (digital) journalist, I thank you for your support and your encouragement. Don’t worry: *SCDD will be right along with me for the ride.

I’m showing my school spirit in a Yellowhammer Creative tee, J. Crew pencil skirt and red Keds today. With wild hair, an irritated complexion and after having woken up at 2 AM due to nerves, it feels like 7th grade all over again. #lesigh

This is what orientation reminded me of:

So. Here I go. Roll Tide, darlings.

Ask Alexis: Does this make me look old?

20140730-112339.jpgQ: Dear Alexis: I find myself in love with THIS dress, but will it make me look old? – In Love with Lace

A: Dear Lace, If you loved it, I certainly hope you bought it as it’s now out of stock. Honestly, one can age almost any outfit with dated hair, jewelry and shoes; so if you purchased this, remember to keep your look youthful or else yes, you’ll look like Thelma Harper. Note the model’s styling: her hair and shoes are pretty simple, right? That’s for a reason. The shorter length and the sheer hemline keep this dress out of Golden Girls territory. The navy hue is a fresh take on the classic LBD, and the bateau neckline balances the hemline, because to have bare shoulders or an exposed bust AND a short hem would cheapen the look. Try a snakeskin or metallic strappy shoe, a coordinating (but not matching!) clutch, and either statement earrings or bracelet (a necklace would be a bit much). DO NOT wear lace shoes, pearls, pantyhose or a shawl. And please, no prom updo.

…to spend the summer in Lilly with Belk!

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of Lilly Pulitzer (the iconic lifestyle brand that began with a Palm Beach juice stand), and tomorrow’s event is a fabulous way to add something chic to your closet!

Summer skincare: 5 masks we love

I am sometimes asked which skincare products I use. I rotate products frequently so my skin doesn’t get used to them, but here are a few of the masks I have in the rotation:

Best “old school” favorite: Noxema, $3.97. Yes, I’m aware this is a cleansing cream and not a mask. But I like to smooth it on, let it sit, and then remove with a hot towel. Sometimes I steam my pores with this on. It really refreshes my complexion!

“But I’m too old to get pimples” mask: ProActiv Refining Mask, $34.99 and Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask Mask, $24.00 These are go-to treatments that I use when a zit decides to wave “Hello!” from my chin (ugh!). The Origins mask can be used all over to clear pores, but I only use the ProActiv mask as a spot treatment. Both work wonders at drying up the little monsters overnight. But beware, the ProActiv treatment contains sulphur, and less is definitely more (unless you like that fragrance).

Best moisturizing mask: Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask, $24.00. I looooove to put this on when temps rise. My skin get super dry, so it literally drinks this up. And it has a delicious fragrance; it reminds me of a fruity cocktail!

Best cleansing mask: Estee Lauder Perfectly Clean Multi-Action Foam Cleanser/Purifying Mask, $25.00. I love this mask because it does double duty as a cleanser and purifier. This is a super gentle, but super luxurious mask that goes on when I need to decompress with a bubble bath, a glass of wine and a good book.
