Whose cousin was this at the Rose Bowl?

IMG_0516If you watched the Rose Bowl yesterday, you may have seen this young gentleman’s distinctive hair on the Oregon sideline. I know I certainly wondered who he was and what was up with his hair. Sports Illustrated solved both mysteries for me: he’s the Ducks’ ball boy Kwame Mitchell.

Does this spell the return of the high top fade of the 80s and early 90s?  What goes around truly comes around, no?

What to wear to the SEC Championship…

20141201-181008.jpgCome on…you had to see this coming!

I’m in love with J. Crew Factory’s puffer vests (see HERE and HERE), and they look so cute with denim, leather and even skirts. Plus they have pockets, which are great when you have to streamline your purse to meet stadium restrictions on large handbags. (Our local J. Crew Factory store is located at the Outlet Shops of Grand River in Leeds.) A crimson lip can be your finishing touch.

I’d stay away from layering an infinity scarf over this, or wearing it over a denim jacket – the point is not to look like Marty McFly. Instead, I’d choose a chambray shirt and statement necklace. Add flat boots, a light crossbody bag like this one from Coach and your favorite gameday button and you’re done! To get more mileage out of it, try pairing it with a dressier pant, patterned sweater and heels (as J. Crew Factory styles it below).

You could also try layering an oversized cardigan, a fur vest* or even belting a long scarf over your outfit to achieve a similar effect (InStyle shows you how HERE). An added benefit as you enjoy tailgating or dress for seasonal occasions: these options all camouflage food babies!

Roll Tide and happy shopping!

*Beware the faux fur ones appearing either totally lackluster/dry or super shiny; it’s a dead giveaway that they’re fake.

Nope.

It involves keeping your clothes on (ahem, Mrs. Kanye West) and Solange Knwoles did it in immaculate white ensembles this past weekend. The occasion? Her chic, modern wedding to love Alan Ferguson. The interweb collectively swooned.

The couple celebrated Saturday night with a showing of Mahogany (a classic film the couple watched on their first date…and we spy Solange carrying that adorable Kate Spade bag we posted!) at Indywood Cinemas, and were married at The lovely Marigny Opera house on Sunday. The pair pedaled to the ceremony on matching white vintage bikes, for which Ms. Knowles wore a Stéphane Rolland caped pantsuit. She changed into an Humberto Leon for Kenzo caped gown for the ceremony, and the theme seems to have been white haute for all, including her mother, Tina, and sister, Beyonce.

Photos were released via Vogue.com Sunday evening.

Fab. (And yes, I’m all about the drama of capes. See HERE and HERE.) This is such a refreshing personal statement that seems authentic to Solange’s overall style and aesthetic. Nothing about this wedding (from the pictures, at least) seems forced or hung up on traditional wedding style, which I think is great.  I’m especially loving Mama Tina’s ensemble; I hate it when mothers of the bride and groom get stuck in frumpy, matronly outfits. And I’m predicting a lot of “white haute” nuptials and caped brides come spring.

#WIW: Magic City Classic Soiree 2014

20141025-201752.jpg

What a weekend! I needed a night out, and had a blast at one of the Magic City Classic’s premier events, the Classic Soirée! This party with a purpose (raising scholarship funds for students at ASU and Alabama A&M) calls for a special outfit. Rather than my usual sequins, I wanted something a bit more subdued. I wore this blush pink tailored jumpsuit by TopShop (a UK retailer partnering with none other than Beyonce on an clothing line!), paired with my Grande Crystal Drops necklace from J. Crew. Simple, effortlessly chic, and a definite standout in a sea of LBDs.

I love pink; I don’t actually wear it often, but it’s my signature color. And while the fall color palette is decidedly darker, I like to wear “blush and bashful” as a counterpoint. The talented Kimberly Black-Crawford of Saks Fifth Avenue applied my makeup; go see her! I love a bronze eye with a nude lip; for a bit of color I mixed in a little of Trish McEvoy’s luxe Essential Lip Balm available at Saks.

And I took an amazing “usie” with the host of the Soirée; check out our Instagram page to find out more @samechicdifferentday!

Sophia Webster brings glamour, whimsy to J. Crew shoe collection

If you have read this blog for any length of time, then you’re probably aware of how much I love J. Crew (one might call it an obsession!). It can be difficult to find well-made, unique pieces that retain a sense of relevance and charm from one season to the next, but I never go wrong when I shop there. And rather than having to piece together an ensemble from multiple places, I can often find a head-to-toe look all at once at my local J. Crew.

Shop J. Crew’s New Arrivals by clicking HERE.

More than once, I’ve run in the Birmingham store in a complete panic because I need something at the last minute, and thanks to their Very Personal Stylists and wide selection, have been successful in pulling something together.  (P.S. The VPS work around your schedule – which is super-convenient!)

This season, I’m especially excited about the Sophia Webster for J. Crew Holiday Collection. I’ve shared Ms. Webster’s line before, and her newest collection does not disappoint.

Tom Mora (Head of J.Crew Women’s Design) says, “Sophia Webster is such a natural fit for us – her use of color and patterns feels really in touch with the J.Crew DNA and all of the things we love.  We try never to take ourselves too seriously, and I think she has that same sensibility.” (Agreed! – Alexis)

Famed editor Diana Vreeland once said, “The eye has to travel.”  As Webster’s pieces are exquisitely detailed in terms of pattern and construction – I suggest keeping the remainder of your look simple so that the focus is on your feet. These shoes bring chic pizazz to your LBDs, sheaths, pencil skirts and sweaters; couldn’t you just see them with a pair of slim leather pants or destroyed denim and a simple tee?

I’ll take the bronze-black Eva and floral-multi Lola in a size 8, please and thank you!

I rarely do outfit posts, but since I’m linking up with My Life Well Loved’s #14DaysofStyle contest on Instagram, I thought I’d share today’s look. I’m wearing J. Crew’s navy and cream silk gingham top, a black pencil skirt and bubble necklace, and C. Wonder’s blue velvet “Southern Belle” smoking slippers.

I love patterns, mixing black and navy, and pieces that are a bit quirky, and this outfit has all those elements.  Fall is  not my favorite season, but being able to stick to my style in unique ways helps me hang on until Spring and Summer roll back around. Oh – I’m also wearing a black cardigan…because I don’t want to catch a cold or the flu! 😉
