‘Rear Window’ airs tonight

One of my all-time favorite movies is showing tonight! If you’ve never seen any of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic suspense films, Rear Window is one to watch.  The plotlines and (Edith Head-designed fashion) are not to be missed.

Rear Window stars James Stewart and Grace Kelly as a housebound photographer and his model girlfriend, respectively, out to solve a murder they believe occurred across the courtyard.  They get a little too close to the action, and to find out how it ends, go see the movie! Find it at a theater near you by clicking HERE.

I’m including a few shots of Kelly’s beautiful wardrobe. They simply do not make clothes like this anymore.

Ask Alexis: I need #BooBooKitty’s jumpsuit!

Q: Help! Where can I find the red-haute jumpsuit Anika Calhoun wore on the Empire finale last night? – Wannabe Boo Boo Kitty

A: Dear Boo Two,

That jumpsuit was a great look for Anika (played by Grace Gealey)! The simplicity was amplified by the color, which denotes power and passion – perfect for the Empire’s scorned, scheming debutante. Find a similar one via BCBG Max Azria for yourself in store or online at Saks Fifth Avenue! The “Rosanna” Cutout Jumpsuit ($298; available in Red Berry and Black) features princess seaming and darts to give it shape, on-trend wide legs and strategic cutouts for sex appeal. For a precise fit – the bust line and back strap should fit “just so” – take it to your tailor. As the silhouette adds plenty of drama, keep your shoes simple (a la Anika’s nude pump).  And to take it from day to dinner, simply add a structured blazer or moto jacket! I’ve shared my love of chic jumpsuits before; they are so easy to wear with a statement necklace or cuff!

Were you on the edge of your seat during Empire’s two-hour finale too? Wowsers! The Dynasty-esque catfight viewers have been waiting for all season went down (and while we absolutely don’t condone violence, here’s a look at the jumpsuit in question).

Happy shopping! – Alexis

…find your perfect pants at J. Crew!

Whether you’re looking for skinny, slim, wide leg, straight leg or drapey options, they can hook you up. I’ve got my eye on the Reese Pant in neon persimmon.  I’m just not sure about the elastic waist, although I love the pair I received last year. The streamlined Martie Pant is more my speed…but they don’t come in neon persimmon!  I’m definitely not sold on the short culottes I see people wearing.  But that’s the point of this event and the Very Personal Stylists: to help you discover options you might avoid initially.

Plus, did you know J. Crew offers teachers and college students a 15% discount (in-store only) on regularly-priced merchandise with valid ID? Well, now you know…and knowing is half the battle!

Happy shopping!

Friday Fab: Winter White

Yes, I wear white after Labor Day (although technically this is “Warm Ivory”)! I love, love, love this shift from J. Crew. It’s heavy enough to keep me warm, the exposed zipper details are a fun accent and it’s super comfortable! It’s easy to dress this up as shown, or to wear a simpler necklace or statement earrings instead. As it warms up I’ll change my footwear and nix the tights.

This is the key to wearing lighter colors in winter: make sure they are in season-appropriate fabrics. Leave the linen and eyelet for warmer temps.

Baby it’s cold outside…

Brrr! I rarely post my personal outfits, but I love this vintage coat so much that I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be photographed in it by Derrick Curry of Camera Play Photography. It was a fortunate find at Birmingham’s own Hanna Antiques Mall (sticker price: $60!). The mink collar and satin lining are in flawless condition, and it has its original buttons. I only had it dry cleaned; it was in perfectly wearable condition. It’s provenance? Loveman’s department store, which was a local treasure for many years.

It just makes me happy to wear it; vintage coats are made with special attention to quality and detail and have such character. Plus I hate the cold, so I do anything I can to feel cute in spite of frigid temps!

Scarf game proper.

Leopard is a new neutral, didn’t you get the memo? I’m wearing this one from J. Crew Factory today (alas, it’s sold out!). It’s kind of dreary so the fierce kitty print and persimmon trim are giving me a much-needed boost (and another layer of warmth!).

Why I wear pearls…

IMG_0525I believe in wearing pearls. I love that they symbolize strength, struggling to transform from a tiny grain of sand while trapped inside an oyster (if that’s not a metaphor for life, what is?). But they also convey a delicate elegance. They are uncomplicated, without the flash and sparkle of a diamond or emerald, but their understated luster has an undeniable glamour as well.
It’s difficult to wear them without thinking of the “pearl of great price” mentioned in the Bible.

I wear them to remind myself of those I love: my favorites are the opera-length set I’ve “borrowed” from my mother, the bracelet with a diamond clasp my parents gave me when a special friend committed suicide and the tiny necklace I wore when I was little. But don’t get it twisted: I wear ear bobs from the Beauty Supply that cost 99 cents and a graduated necklace from Forever 21 that cost $2 too.

I also wear them to remind me what I’m worth. One year someone gave me $5 in play money to tell me how much my work was valued. Yes, I was insulted. Yes, I was very hurt. Yes, I was very, very angry. But I kept my composure, and I let those emotions irritate me enough to serve as motivation to propel myself beyond that individual’s rudeness and low opinion. The next day, I put on my mother’s pearls and faced the day with my head held high. I decided that person’s opinion didn’t define me. Lesson? Never let someone else determine your worth, especially those who seek to devalue you.

You’re priceless. Treat yourself that way, and others will too.

How to wear: marsala

image

New year, new COLOR of the year from Pantone! This year’s signature shade is “marsala,” a rich burgundy wine that you’ll see in clothing, accessories, makeup and home décor throughout 2015.  You can wear it in small doses via your nail or lip color (my go-to’s are Essie’s “Wicked” nail polish and Guerlain’s luscious Rouge G de Guerlain L’Extrait  in Orgueil) or add it to your wardrobe. I love this ensemble from H&M because has all the right elements: layers, a modest hint of skin and a monochromatic top-to-bottom palette that wins kudos for being slimming!

Burgundy lace top, $49.95; Burgundy woven camisole, $34.95; and Burgundy suit pants (featuring the return of the wide-legged trouser, for all of you who are tired of skinny pants!), $59.95, all via H&M
