Ask Alexis: I see London, I see France…

Q:  I know sheer looks are hot right now, but what do I wear with thin maxi dresses?  Once I walk outdoors, they can be totally see-through! – B. A.

A:  I am SO glad you asked!  Ladies, dressing is all about leaving something to the imagination; no one wants to see your underpants in the light of day!  It may seem a little old-fashioned, but to avoid an impromptu peep show I recommend wearing a slip.  Not the itchy kind with a petticoat you remember from your childhood, but a form-fitting, convertible one about knee-length that can add a layer of opacity to those sheer summer dresses.  In lightweight, curve-friendly fabrics, slips can also provide a smoothing effect (I would avoid lace, piping or other types of trim if you plan to wear it under a thin garment).  With shoulder straps that can be worn normally, removed  or worn crossback or halter-style, you’ll find that a slip is a versatile, must-have undergarment. Two to try?  Assets by Sara Blakely’s Fantastic Firmers Full Slip ($42-44) and Vassarette’s Body Curves Full Slip ($16.99); both come in black in and nude, and both are available at Target.

I Love My: Nude Pumps

‘Parade’ pump by BCBGeneration, $89.99

Ladies, there’s nothing like a buff or beige pump to lengthen the leg. What I also love about a nude pump is that as a neutral accessory, it’s very versatile.  So whether you’re wearing neon, pastel, a primary color or basic black, this shoe will complement your ensemble.  My best practice is to keep a couple of pairs: a strappy sandal to wear with sundresses, jumpsuits and shorts and my current love: a closed-toe platform in a cashew-colored snakeskin.  The animal print gives it visual interest, and the covered platform and stiletto heel will give your legs a wow factor!

Of course, skintones vary and thankfully so do the options.  It’s very easy nowadays to find a shoe that will flatter your complexion in a toasted almond, beige, tan and so forth.  Make it a must-have for your collection.

P.S. if you find your pair is a little too tight, be sure to stretch it so that you don’t injure your feet.  Your local shoe repair can do this, or you can try what I did: a shoe stretcher!  It’s a wooden insert with a screw you turn to widen it.  Mine (okay, the one I borrowed from my mother) is cedar and can be slipped into either the right or the left shoe.  The stretcher is strategically perforated; it has a plastic nodule (or “ortho plug”) you can remove and place in key spots where your tootsies need the most relief. It works like a charm!

Halston remains an enigmatic icon in ‘Ultrasuede’

Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston is Whitney Smith’s 2010 ode to Roy Halston Frowick, better known  simply as “Halston.”  Known for his modern, pared-down yet uber glam take on womenswear, Halston owned the seventies and proved that American design was as relevant as those from Europe.  Smith – in a Smokey and The Bandit-type Trans Am and various hairstyles – sets out to uncover more about the designer’s life and legacy.

Along the way, he meets up with the imperious and formidable André Leon Talley, a chatty Liza Minelli (who was close friends with the designer), former model Anjelica Huston and legendary model Pat Cleveland, a favorite of Halston’s (she was known as The Moth, because she strutted toward the light.  She also modeled in his triumphant  “Battle of Versailles” show.)  We also get a peek at the Halston archives, located at Lipscomb University in Nashville (who knew!) and a crash course in 70s era decadent music and nighlife.

The documentary, which is as light and airy as a swath of chiffon, provides something akin to a Cliff Notes version of Halston’s life and legacy.  Although we get a glimpse into his posh home, posh friends (including Andy Warhol and Bianca Jagger), his archives (located at Nashville’s Lipscomb University) and his decadent and ultimately tragic life, we don’t get much else.  Smith touches on Halston’s significant influence – the Iowa boy became a milliner who put new First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in a pillbox and simple cloth coat and influenced the likes of Calvin Klein – but Smith fails to go deeper into the material.  He also hits the highlights of Halston’s business ventures: the licensing of his name and his partnership with JC Penney (which led to his line being dropped by Bergdorf Goodman) and sort of tainted his brand, but yet which set the stage for the current democratization of fashion (e.g. Isaac Mizrahi at Target and Versace at H&M).  Halston was ahead of his time in realizing that women wanted high fashion even if they didn’t have deep pockets, and he attempted to cash in on that idea before it was popular.

If Smith hadn’t been so concerned with asking shallow questions or in reliving the 70s – if he had looked deeper into Halston’s motivations and his genius – this would have been a much better documentary.

Chic Essential: The Caftan

We’re not talking muu-muus here.  Caftans (and tunics) are to your spring and summer wardrobe what sheath dresses are for the working girl: a definite must have.  You can throw one on and with minimal effort, you’re basically done.  Whether you choose a pretty pattern or a solid color, an already-embellished version or add your own statement necklace or cuff, you can rock these to run errands, lounge by the pool or beach (they make great swimsuit cover-ups and are easy to pack), or to a backyard soiree.  (Side note: my grandmother LOVES them, and gives longer styles as presents.  They make fabulous hostess gowns and just scream “Have cocktails in the casbah with me, dahling.  Or a daiquiri on the patio. Your choice.”)

Love your legs? Then by all means, bare them: caftans easily mimic mini dresses.  If you’d like more coverage, wear them over shorts, jeans, linen slacks, palazzo pants or leggings.  They’re just that versatile and can go from casual to polished with a change of accessories and shoes.  Wedge sandals, canvas espadrilles, or capri sandals (metallic, brightly colored or bedazzled leather flip flops) are all you need to complete the look.  Be  sure to layer sheer fabrics with a cami underneath, and if the flowy style threatens to swallow you up, belt it!

What’s also lovely is this easy style is flattering on all body types! I am loving the bright, v-neck versions at Old Navy right now, which have slits at the sleeves and hem and are priced just under $20 before tax!  Having tried the orange print on, I advise that you go a size up for comfort and note the polished cotton doesn’t offer any “stretch.”  Want to spend a little more? Tory Burch’s offerings are synonymous with wearable, effortless chic.  And you can always search Ebay or your favorite consignment outpost for groovy vintage options.  If you’re really adventurous and want to break out your sewing machine, you can scoop a vintage pattern via Etsy and create your own!

Side note: this beaded Victoria’s Secret caftan is now in my closet and is as airy as a summer breeze (it will be worn with white skinnies and shorts).  The black on white Venus Swimwear version mimics the classic Tory Burch pattern and is my new beach cover-up;  it was a steal at $19!

Ask Alexis: Full-Figured and Fabulous

A fabulous reader and former co-worker recently asked me for options for plus size figures.

My advice? No matter what size you are, buy items that fit your body and your lifestyle.  Clothes that are too tight or too loose are unflattering, no matter where you fall on the scale.  Play up the features you love: a tiny waist, to-die-for legs, and elegant neck or lovely shoulders.  If you need shapewear to help smooth your silhouette, by all means go for it.  And be sure your bra fits!  Take advantage of the complimentary fittings offered at Victoria’s Secret and buy underpinnings that support your curves.

Draped and flowy maxi dresses are fine but don’t be afraid to show your curves! Try belting them to emphasize your waist.  If you have a classic coke-bottle shape, work a pencil skirt, or look for classic sheath dresses (also known as wiggle dresses) a la Mad Men’s Joan Holloway or Marilyn Monroe.  These dresses celebrate a fuller figure; check out Monif C’s Whitley” dress.  I advise against box pleats, bows or bulky pockets at the hip; sometimes they can add more visual weight to your look.  I suggest opting for softer pleats and gathering, as well as ruching.  Ruching is great because it camouflages problem areas and can create an hourglass figure.

When buying denim, make sure the hem falls long enough to cover about half of your shoes’ heel, and try fabrics with a touch of stretch.  Looking for a pair made to flatter curves? Check out Cj by Cookie Johnson (founded by Magic Johnsons’ wife and Hunstville native Cookie Johnson), which “offers more room in the thighs and derriere and comes up a bit higher in the back than most lines.”  Watch for waistbands that gap on pants; if something fits perfectly  in the rear and leg, have the waist taken in by a tailor.  Looking for flattering leggings? Try  ReDress NYC’s “teggings”: the hybrid tights+leggings boast a “stretchy, wearable fit” and “can be worn all day without slipping or sliding.”  And they’d be super cute under the retailer’s Cozumel Chevron tunic.  Want to emphasize your neckline?  Look for v-necks; they play up your decolletage beautifully.

Check the length of your blouses; they should fall at your hip line.  Blazers continue to be chic for Spring, but make sure you aren’t selecting jackets that are boxy or shapeless; they add pounds!  Check the darts and seaming and be sure the jackets have more of a fitted shape.  Or try an open draped cardigan over a tank: with a necklace and jeans, you’re ready to go.

If you feel unsure about a stiletto heel, try a platform or wedge, like this one from Torrid (they also have cute clothes!).  Shoes should fit comfortably;  your feet shouldn’t bulge or strain against any straps.  No matter what size you are, you should be able to stride or sashay with confidence.  I also suggest opting for belts; they can create the illusion of a waist if you’re “straight up and down” like me, or to accentuate a small one.  And don’t skimp on jewelry: draw the eye to a bold statement necklace, cuff bracelet or earrings (but not all of the above simultaneously).

Hands down some of the cutest pieces I’ve seen thus far are Monif C.’s convertible dresses.  They don’t compromise fabric choice or silhouette and although they range from $195 to $235, the designer promises “infinite possibilities” in terms of styling the dress.  Monif C. also invites you to sign up for their monthly $100 gift certificate giveaway!  The figure-flaunting dresses come in a rainbow of colors and are in a word, glamorous.    I also love ASOS Curve, which offers  well-tailored, trend-conscious pieces.

Finally, check out fab designer Isaac Mizrahi’s tips HERE.  No matter what your size or price point, you shouldn’t have to settle for subpar style.

Fab Find: Monogram Necklaces

Something about monogrammed jewelry just seems to add a touch of class to an outfit, no?

Looking to add a pop of color to your every day style? I am LOVING these super cute and budget friendly acrylic monogram necklaces, available online at Swoozie’s and The Pink Monogram!  Choose your lettering style (script, block, filigree, etc.), pendant color and chain and enter your initials (or those of a loved one!) and you’re good to go! Swoozie’s also has single-letter options available.

For those of you who prefer a more classic look, diamonds may be a girl’s best friend but The Pink Monogram also features a handcut CZ option with the “look and feel of the real thing” minus the pricetag.  Not interested in (faux) bling?  There are rose gold, sterling silver and traditional yellow gold options as well.  Expect to pay somewhere in the three to four figure range for these pieces (acrylic versions are significantly less expensive).  Look around on The Pink Mongram at your leisure; there are some gorgeous pieces!

These dress up even a tee shirt and jeans or are the perfect touch for your simple spring sheaths.  They also make chic keepsakes for grads and bridesmaids – or treat yourself!
