SOS

Uh oh! What do you do on days when NOTHING in your stuffed closet feels (or fits) right?  Usually, laying out my outfits for the week helps, but this morning I was at a complete loss, and found myself running around with a boot in one hand and a (nonmatching) skirt in another. Shop ’til you drop at Fashion’s Night Out

If you love fashion like WE love fashion, then make room in your social calendar for Fashion’s Night Out, a night of global fabulosity initiated by Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, the city of New York and NYC & Company to promote and strengthen the fashion industry.  Designers, models, retailers, shoppers and anyone who’s anyone in the industry will unite in the name of style at events around the world on Thursday, September 6.

Celebrations are planned at several locations locally. Brookwood Village will host a fashion extravaganza consisting of a show (featuring local personalities) and exhibits during Brookwood Live.  Proceeds will benefit the Junior League of Birmingham’s community projects.

The Summit has celebrations planned as well; Saks Fifth Avenue will present a fall fashion preview, makeovers (and goody bags!) and more.  Belk at The Summit will showcase its own fall fashion with free train cases for the first 100 guests, treats from Dylan’s Candy Bar and Magnolia Bakery and Serendipity 3’s famous frozen hot chocolate, and the chance to win a VIP trip for two to Charleston’s Fashion Week 2013.

And retailers on 18th Street in Homewood present FNO Homewood, “a fabulous block party offering food, fashion and fun”; click HERE for more information. Be sure to look for Birmingham Fashion Week‘s tents during FNO; they will be offering a chance to win a VIP package to BFW 2013.

Be prepared to party in the name of fashion from 6-9 PM at all locations, and dress to impress!

Best and Worst Dressed at the 2012 BET Awards

You knew it was coming.

Best dressed goes to Taraji P. Henson in bright turquoise, Rocsi Diaz  in a nude bedazzled number (and that “new boo” glow from toting around with Eddie Murphy), Selita Ebanks giving us FASHION in an embellished short dress with black overlay (it’s a risk but me likey!) and Tamia Hill in a classy and understated black evening gown.  Good to see her back on the scene. I also loved Elle Varner’s entire ensemble and two snaps: Mariah Carey is looking every inch the diva.  WORK!

Worst dressed? Whew! Tyga in that leather t-shirt (no sir!), Porscha Coleman’s thirsty sartorial salute to Latoya Jackson, Kenya Moore’s pageant look (those days are over, boo), and Lala Anthony’s homage to I Dream of Jeannie. Was a wardrobe change not in the budget for her?  Regina King and Tatiana Ali, I expected a lot more from you.  Boom Kat (Laurieann Gibson) has officially gone to the dark side. 2 Chainz is taking over for Bootsy Collins, and Rick Ross just looks ridic.  Chante Moore, your tribute to Donna Summer was on point but must you look like a cougar on the prowl? You might want to check with Tamia’s stylist.  And take Nicki Minaj with you.

I’m done.  Y’all can look for pics of Kimye and Blue Ivy’s parents elsewhere.

To Have and To BHLDN

You didn’t think we’d let June slip by without an ode to the most popular wedding month of all, did you? Pish posh! And because we don’t like anything boring and ordinary, we dreamed up a wedding wardrobe worthy of only the most daring, most imaginative bride, using the lovely pieces at BHLDN.com, a division of Anthropologie.  The clothing, footwear, and accessories featured on the website invite brides (and those who hope to be, one day) to dream away.

Our vision is inspired by brides who throw caution to the wind and let their personality shine through.  This fantasy bride skips a ball gown or body-conscious fit and flare for her big day, choosing something short and chic instead.  Yoana Baraschi’s Arabesque embroidered silk organza sheath ($300) or Tracy Reese’s bell-sleeved ‘Persephone’ shift  ($400)let her show off her buff-colored Beverly Feldman ‘Côte de Blancs’ peep toes ($220).   She carries the Bountiful Bliss clutch by St. Erasmus ($425) in one hand and Jihan Zencirli’s Geronimo! Balloons in the other ($180 for 2).

And after the festivities are over? No run-of-the-mill, farewell suit for our bride.  She’s headed to a farflung location for her honeymoon, perhaps to the French Riviera.  This navy and white knit macrame Leeward jacket and short suit by Orla Kiely ($425 for the jacket; $315 for the shorts) is perfect.  Bon voyage!

P.S. This savvy bride doesn’t come home facing a mountain of thank-you notes to be written.  She consults Something New: The Bride’s Complete Guide to Writing Thank You Notes by chic sisters Emily Wood Smith and Rachel Wood Daniels!

CNBC features J. Crew’s “King of Retail” Mickey Drexler

In case you missed it, CNBC recently profiled CEO Millard “Mickey” Drexler, the retail guru who got millions to fall into the GAP and wear Banana Republic, and who reimagined Ann Taylor.  Drexler is most recently behind the mega-success of J. Crew (their revenue was up $1.9 billion in 2011).   J. Crew and the Man Who Dressed America was hosted by David Faber and featured commentary from none other than Vogue’s Anna Wintour.

Little known fact (even to a J. Crewaholic like me) : J. Crew began as the Popular Club Plan in 1947 and debuted as J.Crew outfitters in 1983.  Drexler even helped launch the Apple stores and is on the board of Apple.  Once considered the poor man’s Ralph Lauren,  now the clothes are “like a triple decker sundae” gushed company President and Executive Creative Director Jenna Lyons.  Drexler was quite outspoken about getting the boot from the GAP, and even addressed current customer complaints and issues with fabrication and design, which are often featured on blogs such as J. Crew Aficionada

Drexler also revealed that Jackie O served as his imaginary muse, particularly during his tenure at Ann Taylor.  He said he’d ask himself, “Would Jackie like this?”.  It is easy to see that Drexler understands the finer points of retailing and appealing to the consumer; no detail is left to chance, and J.Crew’s painstaking attention to detail means its clothes wind up on the back of  even the First Lady of the United States.

See Drexler’s take on design HERE.

Joseph Abboud to visit Belk/Riverchase Galleria May 24

Designer Joseph Abboud

Gentlemen,  mark your calendars for this special event:

Menswear designer Joseph Abboud will showcase his new line, Black Brown 1826, at the Belk/Riverchase Galleria next Thursday.  The contemporary menswear line is sold exclusively at Belk and Lord & Taylor stores.  The event (okay, it’s a party!), which begins at 6 PM, will feature fabulous prizes, music, craft beer tasting from Olde Mecklenburg Brewery and even complimentary cigars for the first 50 guests.  Guests will have a chance to win a $500 Black/Brown 826 wardrobe and a weekend trip to Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Ross Bridge!  Appetizers and wine will be on deck via the B&A Warehouse.

Guys, if you’re stuck in a style rut (I mean, how many times can one wear khaki pants and a blue shirt? Come on.) then you need to be at Belk next Thursday from 6 PM to 9 PM.  Black Brown 1826 is advertised as “clothing and sportswear designed for the way real men really live,” and includes a range of options for the well-dressed gent: suits, dress

If you look like this, you need to be at the Black Brown 1926 launch. You’re welcome.

shirts, outerwear, shoes and accessories, as well as more business casual-type offerings and even golf polos.  It’s not so edgy that you’ll feel like you’re wearing Gordon Gartrell, but the line certainly has pieces that will freshen your spring and summer wardrobe.
