Homewood native Ashley Lewis prepares to show at her first Fashion Week

Homewood High School and Mississippi State alum Ashley Lewis feels fashion design is “something she was called to do.”  Lewis is currently studying at the Academy of Art, a small private college based in San Francisco.  She is presenting her very first show at Fashion Week Alabama -Huntsville.

How long have you been designing?  Oh my gosh.   I’ve worked for a few architectural companies, [Lewis has a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design] but as far as fashion design I’ve always been making my own clothes, and it’s always been a passion of mine.

Do you sew your own garments? I do.  I sew every single piece.  I actually learned a little from my grandmother and that’s how I started making my own clothes.  [Later] I developed techniques to make [the process] go faster after taking classes at the Academy.

How did you get involved with FWAH?  I was one of the volunteers for Birmingham Fashion Week and I think a friend emailed me that Huntsville was having a fashion week. I emailed Le Jeune [the founder]; she let me apply and I was accepted.  I’ve volunteered and I modeled at BFW last year, but this is my first time showing.  I’m nervous and excited about it.

What will you show? The dress that I wore in Miss AL USA pageant in November is one of the main pieces in the collection and the other pieces are based off it.  I’m showing  – since this one is a small collection – a few daytime pieces with shorts, suits, skirts and tops, the gown, and an avant garde piece that is very detailed. I used a lot of shantung, and very lightweight breathable fabrics that flow but give you definition.  I used a lot of satins and chiffons also.  This collection is basically one you can mix and match with, and you can dress it up or dress it down.

Can you describe the individual who wears your designs? She’s young, she’s very fashion forward, she wants to be in the know.  Her daily job would be something where she’s always moving. It could be anything from being a curator in a museum to an architect, but she loves the city life and absorbing things.  My dream client would be Sandra Bullock. [With] her body type and the way she carries herself, she can wear anything. And she’s so elegant.

After receiving a master of arts, Ashley would like to move to New York, work for DVF [Diane Von Furstenberg], and eventually have her own fashion line.  For now, she takes private orders and plans to have a website up soon.  Catch her at Fashion Week Alabama Huntsville this week!

HAUTE-lanta: NFLer Vernon Davis to host campMODA benefit June 9

San Francisco baller Vernon Davis and his business partner Antone Barnes (of Modern Class Design )are joining forces with  Museum of Design Atlanta for a night celebrating fashion, art and design to benefit the museum’s camp MODA, which impacts  inner-city youth.  Both men’s experiences growing up in inner cities spurred their commitment to revitalizing their community.

“I was always interested in art as a kid, but never felt free to pursue it because in my neighborhood you either went in a direction of sports or you got into drug dealing, but definitely not art,” Davis explains. “But it shouldn’t be that way, which is why I’m encouraging kids to pursue art or whatever their dreams are.”  Through his Modern Class Design firm, the Pro Bowler and former University of Maryland studio art major offers interior, exterior and automotive design services.

But that’s not all.  The evening will also feature a design competition for talented up and comers from area high schools, the Portfolio School and Savannah College of Art and Design, with cash prizes and internships with Modern Class Design at stake.

This fab event will be hosted at MODA, located at 1315 Peach Street NE in Atlanta. Tickets are $50 for general admission, $75 for VIP and can be purchased HERE.  Proceeds benefit campMODA’s efforts to “provides students who have an interest in art with the ability to examine the impact of design on their daily lives. ”

Don’t Hate Me ‘Cause I’m Beautiful…

In all seriousness, I am humbled and tickled to be named one of Birmingham’s Most Beautiful People for 2012.  It’s an absolute honor, and the article in this month’s Birmingham Magazine  (on newstands now and available online) is filled with a diverse, talented and community service-oriented bunch. (BTW, Mrs. Johnston was extremely jazzy; I want to be like her when I grow up!)  What makes this a beautiful place to live is the spirit of the people who live here, no matter what we look like on the outside.  At the end of the day, pretty is as pretty does, no?

And for what’s it’s worth dear reader, I think YOU are beautiful too.

XOXO Alexis

Butler’s Grooming Plans Saks Fifth Avenue Expansion

A small statue on Christopher Butler’s desk has the following Vince Lombardi quote inscribed on it: “The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender.”  During my recent chat with the CEO and co-founder of Butler’s Grooming, it became apparent that the work ethic and discipline it took for him to become a record-holding high school track star and an NFL running back are no less necessary when forging one’s place in the local business community.

Since its opening in June 2009, the men’s grooming lounge (a partnership between Butler and NFL linebacker Karlos Dansby) has served thousands of clients, but as Butler himself notes, there are still many who don’t even know it exists.  However, their focus on providing quality service is paying off; plans are underway for Butler’s to open a second location at The Summit’s Saks Fifth Avenue this spring.

“Men want to feel good, and they want to look good,” Mr. Butler explains.  “We’re a man’s man’s place, and we focused on designing a masculine environment.”  The curent location is almost a fantasy man cave come to life, with its multiple flat screens,  WiFi, inviting bar and comfy leather armchairs.  A grand, old-fashioned (but fully functioning) shoeshine stand, private massage and treatment room, and a Hall of Fame with framed sports memorabilia complete the downtown location’s decor. Nail treatments, hot lather shaves, facials, and the services of a barber and stylist help men look their absolute best.

“We have guys we have to almost kick out the door,” Butler notes.  “For the busy professional, we value his time.  We want to [ensure] that he has the very best experience, that [the surroundings are] memorable and he wants to return.  It’s truly about the relationship; customers become part of our family.”

Why was now a particularly good time to expand and partner with Saks?

Butler’s enthusiasm is infectious. “I think it’s going to be a great fit in terms of the services and quality we offer.  I think the grace of God opens doors and sometimes you have to walk through them.  Expansion into key markets has always been the vision, and timing is everything.  The timing was right for us and we’re very excited.”

The artistic renderings for the Saks location are fabulous.  The 1700 square foot men’s club will be located in the men’s department and will feature a bar, cafe and billiards lounge, recessed televisions, private treatment rooms and a concierge.  In a word, it is plush.  The grand opening is slated to be held in a few months and may even feature some special guests.  In the meantime, if you want to be treated like a VIP, Butler highly recommends one of their signature services

Butler is clear that the new expansion is part of a team effort.

“Given this economy, [you really have to] be strategic.  If you have a dream, go for it.  You have to make sure you have the right team in place that shares your vision.  If you do, the sky’s the limit.’

Gentlemen, want some spring grooming tips straight from Butler’s?  Stay tuned!

Shoe Designer Sam Edelman Makes Giving Chic

I told you this was going to be good.

Sam Edelman – one half of famed design team Sam and Libby – will make a personal appearance at Belk at the Summit on Saturday, March 31 from 1-3 PM.  But not only is he going to showcase haute looks from his Spring 2012 shoe collection (which is fab all by itself), he’s also going to make a $5000 donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama.  And as if the news could possibly be any more fabulous, Belk is matching his donation.

“As a male designer in the world of women’s footwear, I come in contact everyday with women whose lives are touched by breast cancer in one way or another,” said Sam Edelman. “I’m so blessed that women love shoes. I’m so blessed to work with women every day of my life and I’m so blessed to be able to give back.”

I peeked at the Spring collection, and it holds true to what the Sam Edelman brand is known for:  fashionable and modern silhouettes at great prices.  The collection features  – of course – chic ballet flats (featuring studs, snakeprint color blocking), satin espadrilles, loafers and  strappy flat sandals in bright and neutral tones, as well as gladiator sandals, wedges, peeptoes and slingbacks.

See you there!
