Congratulations, Cowboy Carter

Well-deserved. And overdue.

The tight faces and side eyes during the Grammys — and the swift and bratty (see what I did there?) nature of certain hot takes after Beyoncé’s Best Country Album and Album of the Year wins — should tell you everything you need to know about why performative measures that always missed the, ahem, bullseye elsewhere have publicly or even quietly exited the stage.

“She only got that because…”
“Overrated”
“She doesn’t deserve it”
“She doesn’t belong here”
“Why can’t she just be happy with —?”

Now imagine that language in any other setting in America and you’ll understand the experience of countless Black women and people who have been cheering for Beyoncé for years.

The lone star (screen grab via YouTube)

Only God knows, only God knows: what it’s like to be met with very loud outrage for having the courage to exist — and the audacity to do it at an undeniably higher level. Every time and everywhere you show up.

Stay home for the Cowboy Carter tour and stay mad from over there.

Signed,
A White Horse in Alabama
