Love That: Yay! Life! Magnets

As seen in O Magazine, June 2012 in The World According to Gayle:

These colorful and cheerful magnets are too cute.  My favorite is the Yay! Big Hair!”

The higher the hair, the closer to God, honey.

There is a Yay! magnet for just about any situation or interest you can think of (wine, pay day, bacon, etc.), and they go for $3.50 a pop.

In which I discover what a vacation is….

Yes, I do take vacations (although, does it count as one if I blog about it?).  Anyway, during this past Memorial Day weekend I explored Panama City Beach and documented it with Instagram.

Headed down to the beach?  Here are some places you should check out:

EAT:  Bruno’s Pizza in Seagrove Beach.  These pies are piping hot, full of flavor and worth the wait! We had half supreme, half pepperoni, and it didn’t last long enough for me to photograph.  Their weekly pizza buffet is seven days a week, from 11-2.  We just HAD to stop at Polar Bear Ice Cream…who counts calories on vacation?  And if you’re in the mood for sushi, stop by Hana Japan at Pier Park and get the spicy shrimp roll.

SHOP:   It wouldn’t be a trip to Destin if you didn’t hit up the SilverSands outlet.  I got as far as J. Crew, Coach and Saks Fifth Avenue.  I managed to make it out alive, with a pair of rainy day ballet flats (normally $39.50, made mine for just under $11.)

STAY: On the beach! Duh.  Whether you crash with family (like this frugalista did) or lounge in luxury, you have to be near the emerald waters and sugar-white beaches.  Want to splurge? The Serenity by the Sea spa at the Hilton Sandestin resort awaits.

PLAY: I don’t do jet skis or miniature golf; my hobby is shopping.  And the St. Andrews area in downtown Panama City beach is a thrifter’s delight.  If you brake for antique malls, Elegant Endeavors Antique Emporium is your Shangri-La; Debra Anderson and Jane Lindsey make treasure hunting a blast.  I’ll post about the vintage black silk dress I bought (half-off!) for $7.50 later.  Pier Park in Panama City Beach offered the best in shopping, people-watching and parlaying; it even hosted a carnival!  Just want to enjoy the water?  Pompano Place has the breathtaking views.

The Look for Less: Celine Color Block Clutch

Colorblocking is a MAJOR trend for Spring 2012.    Whether you rock a striped blouse, skirt, or dress or decide to accessorize a neutral ensemble with colorblocked  accessories, this is a trend to try.  Today I’m going “resort prep” with a black tee and slacks, aqua sweater, Chanel-esque Jessica Simpson color blocked flats, and pearls.  I like to dip my toe into some trends; over-investing in pieces that I can’t wear into the next season (or the next) is not part of my style philosophy.  So I’m using this trend to insert a pop of color or a little visual interest into my everyday look.

That’s also why I love P.S. I Made This, which takes of-the-moment pieces and re-interprets them in a budget-friendly, super chic way, all way encouraging readers to get crafty!  Erica Domesek’s ideas are genius!  She’s  reimagined Celine’s colorblock envelope clutch at a fraction of the price using a tote, bright vinyl, and hardware.

Ready to DIY?  Click HERE for a nifty video (I’m going to need those bracelets you’re wearing in it, Erica. Please and thank you!).

And if breaking out the glue gun is not your style, this super cute clutch and crossbody bag by Francesca’s Collection are just as cute, and under $40!

Best Dressed: 2012 Oscars

Hollywood’s big night seemed to be more about fashion than the actual Oscar giveaway!  If you missed The Dictator -also known as Sacha Baron Cohen – dumping what was (hopefully!) Bisquick on Ryan Seacrest, then YouTube it.  Billy Crystal’s Oscar hijinks, a Cirque du Soliel high wire act and a thoughtful In Memoriam tribute featuring Esperanza Spaulding singing “What a Wonderful World” made for a lovely evening.  But on to the fashion.

Viola Davis,  did not take home the Best Actress  trophy but was stunning in an emerald Vera Wang with beaded bustline and natural hair.  Davis  gets a round of applause for leaving the wigs and hair pieces at home and boldly stepped out wearing her short bronze curls, and was FIERCE.

I also loved  Gwyneth Paltrow’s look; she absolutely owned the red carpet in a modern Tom Ford white gown with asymmetrical neckline and chic floor length cape (which she removed to present with Robert Downey Jr.), minimalist hair and makeup and a wide cuff.

And Michelle Williams’ coral Louis Vuitton peplum-waist gown with pleating was simply a breath of fresh air on the red carpet.  Her pink Bottega Veneta clutch was also on trend in terms of the color combination.

Diddy – who was executive producer of Best Documentary winner Undefeated – takes home the crown for the gentlemen; I don’t think he ever misses on the red carpet.  He even brought his own lint roller!
