I Never Met a Stiletto I Didn’t Like

Scarlett/Sam Edelman $199

…and this lovely traffic stopper is no exception.  My eyes zeroed in on it in Belk and I HAD to try it on! This shoe is NOT for the timid!  The dual design peep toe – the leopard calf hair  is the business in the front and studded suede provides the party in the back – is saying a lot, so if you dare to wear them keep your ensemble  simple: rock a black tee and skinny jeans or a quiet but deadly sheath.

Also available in ivory/black, gold/black, and black/black.

One of the looks featured at the recent NAACP Night of Fashion was one SCDD has been excited about ever since chic reader R.B. Clark mentioned she rocked it at her college’s homecoming: neckties for ladies!  Worn the right way (think Janelle Monae, not Colonel Sanders) it’s definitely one to try.  It’s a play on menswear, but the key is to balance the look with feminine touches.  So don’t bust out a vest, jacket, pocket watch, monocle and spats.  The tie should have a slim silhuoette (no fat knots at your neck!), and can be worn casually with a v-neck or cardigan sweater and denim or with a swingy skirt and button down  – not a tailored business suit.

Red Haute

Brrrr! Baby, it’s cold outside…but crimson clothing and accessories are heating up this winter, according to a recent fashion forecast by The Birmingham News’ Chanda Temple.  I’ve been wearing red since I was a baby, and have become notorious in my family for busting out a red dress for formal occasions.  I’m currently in love with Plenty by Tracy Reese’s crimson lace cocktail dress at BHLDN…it’s “vintage sophisticate” done right.

Party season is almost upon us, so why not pick out something in the showstopping shade?  But consider yourself warned: put on your red dress, red stilettos, red lipstick, red jewelry and carry a red bag and people will be saying “My, my, my!” for all the wrong reasons.  So tone it down with a nude lip or a neutral shoe.

Iron Bowl Cocktails & Couture

We’re a little (okay, a LOT) biased at SCDD, but we fully appreciate that all bets are off during the Iron Bowl. So whether you’re heading out for celebratory cocktails after the game, or just need one to console yourself after the final score, here are our picks for what to sip (courtesy of Birmingham’s own Bottega Cafe). Enjoy. (Oh – and these super cute gameday/cocktail dresses are by Judith March).

The Look: Floral for Fall

If you think bouquets are only for springtime, think again.  First Lady Michelle Obama once again demonstrates she is (as former Essence Beauty Editor Emeritus Mikki Taylor has dubbed her)  “Commander in Chic” by rocking a white Thakoon dress festooned with pink and yellow flowers at a Tampa appearance last month.  Sharp eyes at the Huff Post and New York Magazine discovered that the First Lady has worn this dress multiple times, also proving that one of the most glamorous women in the world shops her own closet!

Mrs. Obama – who wears up and coming and established designers as well as accessible brands like J. Crew and Gap –  recently revealed her philosophy on style:  “Everything in my closet is something I love, so that I can make choices based on what makes sense, knowing that I’m going to love whatever  it is.”

Want the look without the Thakoon pricetag?  Jessica Simpson offers a similar version.

We’re Obsessed: Sheila Bridges’ Harlem Toile de Jouy

As seen in O Magazine, December 2010

While decluttering recently, I came across a packet of magazine clippings with articles I’d been hoarding for decorating my dream house.  One of the articles was this October 2010 piece in People magazine which featured Gayle King’s lovely yellow kitchen.  What caught my eye was the toile wallcovering by consummate designer Sheila Bridges; French toile is linen or canvas ulphostery cloth which features a repeated pastoral scene.  But Bridges’  Harlem Toile de Jouy is unique; it features African-Americans in the scenes and has a satirical edge (sort of putting one in the mind of the art of Kara Walker.  Bridges designed the patterns to “lampoon some of the stereotypes deeply woven into the African-American experience.”  The patterns, which are used on wallpaper, bedding, fabric, glasses and plates, come in several cheery but subtle colors.  At $100 per yard, it’s unlikely I will be redecorating my boudoir in this fabric, but a set of the plates are on my shopping list.  Looking to find culturally affirmative  and chic wallpaper for a nursery or child’s bedroom?  Be sure to check out the “Hopscotch” pattern.
